More colleges are disciplining students for off campus behavior problems

What colleges are doing is not that different from what happens in public and corporate life. If you do certain things outside of the workplace, you might get fired for it even though you were on your own time. Teachers have been fired by school districts because of their pages on social networking sites. You can even lose your job for smoking; even though it’s not done at work.

Colleges do not have jurisdiction but they can have a code of conduct with conduct including behavior off-campus.

I’m not making a value judgment on drinking - I don’t recall that many issues in the good old days on campus.

Because a few students were stupid enough to get caught for doing something stupid in the first place? lol be real.

And if I owned a multimillion dollar estate I wouldn’t want to see a bunch of insignificant college students passed out on my lawn. +10 for BC pwning the noobs.

It sounds like there’s a lot of misinformation here. First and foremost, all of the apartments BC student live in are not in Newton, MA. For those who don’t know, those multimillion dollar estates are in Newton and not in Brighton. Most of the complaints come from the Brighton area of Boston because those residents live right alongside students renting for their junior year. I have never seen nor heard of anything from the Newton crowd in the way of complaints because they don’t interact with our students.

Secondly, in my opinion, it’s quite ridiculous for a college to send an “off-campus liaison” (aka an off-campus RA) to patrol properties that are off campus. Alas BC has to do this to move into Brighton as part of its ambitious ten-year plan.

When I was at BC, I knew a few guys that rented one of those big houses on Beacon St by the reservoir. I think that there were a few of the big houses rented out to students on the road to the Chestnut Hill MBTA stop.

I haven’t spent a huge amount of time on the campus in many years which is why I wasn’t sure if the problem was in Newton or Boston.

“Alas BC has to do this to move into Brighton as part of its ambitious ten-year plan.”

Mayor Menino has been pretty public about his desire for concessions for BC expanding into Boston.

BC has had somewhat of a rocky history with Newton in the past too. It took a major effort to get the current football stadium built. In the past, football games were a major headache in terms of traffic. Maybe they still are - I’m not a big football fan.

Football games are still a huge headache now because of a lack of parking & traffic. They still only have one 6 story parking garage for a 45k stadium.
