Morehead scholar at UNC over HYP

My daughter good friend choose Morehaed scholar at UNC over HYP. The student comes from a well to do family. He was not offered any money in terms fo aid at any HYP school. Lot of people may disgaree with me but I thought he made a wise choice. If money was not an issue, I am not sure then. But in this case I think he made the right choice.

What other parents think about this aspect? His family probably saved $200,000. I think this is a nice money he can invest.

The Morehead scholarship is a lot more than just the money though... it's an experience. The thing that turned me off to it is that UNC Chapel Hill doesn't really have engineering.

I know someone who's child did the same thing. The decision makes sense to me Morehead offers a lot of excellent things that include money and guaranteed foreign internships. If the student wants Harvard, they could probably go there for grad school.

Were you also recipient of morehead scholar?

I was nominated for the Morehead. I did not get selected for the final round up at UNC Chapel Hill, probably because I was dead set on engineering... lol.

You can do a search for Eadad's posts. His son also decided to attend UNC as a Morehead scholar despite being admitted at Yale and a number of equally prestigious schools. My recollection is that the student and his family have been extremely happy about their decision:

He turned down EA at Yale to accept the Morehead. There were I believe 5 total in class that turned down Yale that year along with others turning down HPS. You will find that most OOS Moreheads (and many in-state) are regularly turning down HYPS and more to accept. One of John Motley Morehead's intentions when he created it was to "attract" students to UNC who might otherwise not have considered it or attended.

At Christmas I asked him if he had any regrets about Yale (he was the only one of 7 accepted from his HS class that didn't matriculate there) and he said "none whatsoever" and that he was happier than he had ever been in his life! In all honesty, it probaly took his mom and I longer to get over the fact that we weren't putting a Yale sticker in the back window of our cars, but seeing how truly happy he is has made it very easy to accept.

You also have to remember that graduating as a Morehead is perceived by grad and professional schools as well as employers as being at least equal to graduating from HYPS and with the experiential learning component of the scholarship, many employers and schools see them as more mature, experienced and prepared to take on the next level of challenenge.

I thought UNC Chapel Hill had a strong engineering program, ?

No engineering at Chapel Hill. In NC, NC State is the first school you think of for engineering. It is also offered at Duke and UNC-Charlotte

NC State and NC A and T are, respectively, the white and black land grant schools in North Carolina. You will find agriculture and engineering at these schools. UNC is strong in many sciences but has no real engineering program.
