Just wondering what Georgetown students think is the best about their school...

The best thing about Georgetown is definitely the academics - if you go here for the right program, your instructors will not only be famous or prominent scholars in their fields, but good teachers as well. I would say that the Government major/SFS would get you the most connections for later on, but the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Linguistics is also fairly prestigious and the study abroad programs here are amazing (the majority of students study abroad, whether or not they are language majors.)

The people here are win/lose. If you came from a public school then your first impression will be that there are a bunch of rich, snotty prep school kids who don’t belong to be here. However, many of those rich kids also have the grades to get in and the majority of the student population is middle class. I also happen to know a couple of people here on full scholarship because of need. It’s really all about who you seek out/fall into. Clubs are a great way to get to know people and function as drinking organizations since we don’t have frats. Don’t get me wrong, they do other things but they also host all the parties.

Our official newspaper, The Hoya, kind of sucks in terms of journalistic freedom and standards. It has a history of publishing racist and misogynistic articles, but this varies with the editor. The system itself is EXTREMELY hierarchical and many of my friends have had articles they submitted come out completely different and with incorrect information due to overzealous editing. We also have another newspaper called The Voice that’s supposed to be more racy and some conservative publications.

I would not call the Voice ‘racy.’ I work for the Voice, which is a weekly newsmagazine, not newspaper. It was create during the Vietnam War, so it’s editorials are of a more liberal basis, however, the rest of it is pretty unbiased. Also, the Voice has the best blog if you are looking to find out what’s going on at Georgetown. Check it out at blog.georgetownvoice.com
And by the way, The Hoya is the ‘newspaper of record,’ not the official paper of the school.

My mistake about the Hoya being the official paper - I know that there is a lot of controversy about the restrictions the university has on it because of its name.

As for the Voice being racy, that’s how it was described to me during the Fall of my freshman year. I’m under the impression that it has a lot more autonomy over what it prints though and that it has had pretty controversial political cartoons in the past, though perhaps not this year.

Vox Populi/The Voice’s blog is a good source of information though.

I think the student run corporation that handles all of on campus stores is a unique attribute of Georgetown.

Credit Union, GERMS, the Corp (among loads of other organizations)

It’s the first catholic university in america; the best university in Washington; DC, winner of the most Big East Basketball Tournament Championships (7); and Bill Clinton’s alma mater.

The reunions are pretty sweet too because former classmates are now top chefs, professional wrestlers, scientists, NBA players, doctors, military officers, attorneys, diplomats, journalists, architects, politicians, bankers, spies, writers, and entrepreneurs.
