Im wondering what is a good second language for a Finance and Accounting major? Spanish is my first language so I am considering German or French. I know Chinese is very useful but I don't think I would learn enough in just 6 courses. I'm planning on working in NYC once I graduate so what do you guys think would be more useful as a third language for me. Thanks.

Well, I agree that Chinese would have been the first choice.

After that, maybe Russian or French. German's a good choice, also, although it can be as tough to learn as Chinese.

My wife took German as a third language since grade school in Latin America so she could help me out so that wouldn't be a big problem and French shouldn't be too bad since I already know Spanish.

Chinese is not something to enter into lightly, so your instincts are right.

Do you have any ideas what your goals are going to be -- industry, what you want to do? This is the piece of information that would best answer your question.

If you want to do something with Latin America, why not add Portuguese to your Spanish?

Otherwise, I'd choose French over German, only because it's spoken more widely and Germans are probably better overall at English than French.

German isn't even remotely close to the difficulty of Chinese -- and I say that as a speaker/reader of both. Sorry Calcruzer.... What is true is that German will likely be tougher for you than would French because of common Latin roots with Spanish.

Not sure what industry yet because im still undecided between Finance, Accounting and MIS (will double major). I just want a language that will help me get a job and/or more money.

^ Chinese would be useful for IT.

I agree about learning Portuguese though. That would probably be easy for you, and would be useful if you end up doing work with/in Latin America.

What do you guys think about Arabic?

Arabic would also be helpful but if I'm gonna go with a language not similar to english or spanish I would go with Chinese. Chinese seems too hard to learn in just 24-28 quarter hours that I have available so I don't want to half-ass it. Right now I'm on the fence between German or French because Portuguese I can learn later because it is so similar to Spanish and will be easier to learn later on.

Dubai would be a perfect place to work if you did Arabic. Seeing as you want to be in NYC, it really depends on what kind of work. A minor in a foreign language is a plus for a job position but I don't see how useful it will be. If you want to get into IT or operations management, I recommend Chinese. You can always get better at the language after you graduate. You can also study abroad. That definitely helps. Other then that, I don't see how any other languages seem to make a huge difference besides Spanish (since it's good to know living in America). German and French won't be that beneficial. But if you are just interested in a specific industry such as automobile manufacturing for BMW (German) or Renault (France) then yeah, it wouldn't hurt. I am sure their are plenty of other uses for the languages.

OK so being an international student, I am currently deciding between Arabic and Spanish. I plan on getting into investment banking and I would want to work in Dubai but not before gaining some good experience in the US (that means a good 7 years from now). I would be learning the language in two years. So considering this should I go for Spanish or Arabic?

Easy. Arabic. Spanish for the business world? I don't think so.

No but the point is I might be staying in the US for more than 5 years and I think Spanish might be useful there and there is a very high chance that i forget Arabic (as I wont be able to practice) and considering these factors I am confused. Otherwise, Arabic would have been easy choice. What say?

Arabic will be good if you would like to be a succesful business tycoon.

I'm from Dubai and I'd say that Arabic is not needed here at all. If you plan to work here, English is widely used at corporates here. The second language that is useful here is Hindi. 50% of the 1.2 million population of Dubai is South Asian ( mainly Indian ) so you can see why. Moreover, the Arabs here speak Hindi too so knowing Arabic will not really benefit you as such if you plan to come to Dubai..

Also, keep in mind that Arabic has quite a few dialects. The Arabic from Morroco is different from that of Lebanon/Syria and that the Arabic spoken in Lebanon/Syria is different from that spoken in the Gulf States ( UAE, Qatar, Oman ).

I'd recommend Chinese. It'll definitely be useful in the future!

Cheers
