what do you think is the job with the most openings in the medical feild.
i wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon but my fear is going to college for a long time then figuring out that i am not needed...
i was thinking pharmacist because my bro's friend just graduated from pharmacy school and got a job offer in Florida at walgreens pharmacy for $100,000 a year and a $20,000 signing bonus.

Nursing right now probably has the greatest shortage.

Because of the way residency programs and fellowships are set up, there tends to be a pretty tight control on the number of new physicians entering specialty fields like Ortho. There may of course be geographic areas of relative abundance where you might not be "needed" but conversely there will be areas of absolute shortage. Then it becomes an issue of do you want to live in said area or not, your family situation, malpractice economics and a host of other issues.

BRM's and my classmates have to choose a field in two or three years, and ortho might make a lot of sense. You, however, are probably ten years down the line from this decision, and who knows what may develop. TNF-a inhibitors may render orthopedic surgery obsolete -- a long shot, but who knows? Ten years is a long time. No sense deciding now.
