@Fiona1997 Your school counselor should be able to get information on an admissions appeal process for you, and be able to speak highly of you while on the phone with them. No Catholic School for us. I’m so sorry you are not accepted (yet!)
@Fiona1997 My daughter was.
D was admitted and she is a non-catholic from a Catholic school but from Canada (dual citizen). She has around 90% average, 28 ACT, research papers, not many EC’s but tons of community involvement, volunteers, campaigns. I can’t tell the difference but she is considered a good writer so her essays were probably pretty good. Got good FA package also.
She is probably going to attend MHC, unless something goes very wrong on the admitted students day.
My DD was accepted with a merit scholarship. Very happy
@cuuconbeo Hi! I’m an international student from India and I got admitted as a spring admit. Yeah, I don’t really know how to feel about it too. I mean, what’s their criteria for doing this? Anyway, I’m just glad I’m finding other spring admits so I can really talk and try to understand what’s going on!
@Elevey1 Hi! I’m a spring admit too. All the way from India. I was really curious, if you do end up going, how would you like to spend your fall? Spring entry is actually really alien to me, because we have nothing like this in India (and of course, my parents are a little unsure) but I’m glad that I found more spring admits on this forum to know what it’s actually like!
Hi guys! I’m an international student from India. I’ve been accepted as a spring admit for Jan 2017. I noticed that there aren’t a lot of international (specifically other Indian) students on the Facebook group as well. If there’s any spring admit who’s still not sure, I’d love to talk to you!
@AnimalLover0209 @Elevey1 Oh hi! So glad there are other guys coming in spring too! I’m from Vietnam. But i’ve already been on gap year so waiting for a few more months is pretty painful. Still much better than getting waitlisted anw There are few spring admits so it’s great to know you guys
i was accepted but then was discouraged once i saw my FA. Holyoke is giving me absolutely NOTHING and i didn’t get any merit either. honestly, no matter how much money u have doesn’t mean u want to spend 60K on a school each year. i just think it’s ridiculous that they think i would want to spend that much. anyway just had to rant lol but holyoke is completely out of the option now. no way I’m spending that much
@AnimalLover0209 @cuuconbeo Wow, it’s so great to meet people from all over the world! I think I will probably do a semester abroad before starting. I’m looking into some options now, but am still not certain. What are you guys planning on doing in the fall?
@cuuconbeo @Elevey1 My parents are not really sure about the whole spring semester thing, I can’t really explain how Indian parents can be, but let’s just say they can’t get their heads around this when my other friends are joining in the fall. It’s an almost alien concept to them and I really don’t know whether they will understand how being a Spring Admit works. Anyway, if they do (hopefully), I’m looking at options for a semester abroad too! But I’m also really excited about working in the women’s commission, working for my city’s development body and interning at the UNDP here on projects like rural development in the really backward villages of India!
D was rejected. It was a stretch. Grades…
@Fiona1997 You should definitely appeal. I got in with like a 3.0 gpa and a 1990. Granted my extra curiculars are really good, so that might have cushioned my app , but your stats are like excellent. Like I had a D and several cs and I got accepted.
@ohwhatalife thanks for the reply! I was pretty upset and I didn’t know what killed my application. I have tons of EC’s like VP of the class, President of NHS, Secretary of Key Club, three years of varsity tennis… I contact with the office and they refused my appeal. The officer said, “the result is that we have to make hard choices and select the strongest applicants while also balancing institutional priorities. There is rarely one specific reason that an applicant is not admitted.” So they can’t give a reason. This make me feel very skeptical about their selection process. Don’t know if being a conservative Catholic from a Catholic school kills my chance. I thought they cared about diversity.
@AlexiDingDong Exact same situation! I figured out (I think) it’s because of the CSS Profile. All the other schools I’ve heard back from only asked for FAFSA, and my EFC according to that is automatically $0 so they had no information about my family’s assets. But the CSS Profile is much more extensive and asks about everything from income to assets to the kind of car you drive! Additionally, MHC is the only college so far that considered my non-custodial parent. Feel free to PM me if you’d like to discuss more specifics. It is unfortunate but I don’t know what else we can do about it.
@Fiona1997 That sucks. If it makes you feel better I’m Hispanic and didn’t need much aid, so MHC being need aware and wanting to up diversity probably played a part in it for me and several others. I’m sure you got/will get into other great schools!
@ohwhatalife , thank you! Good luck!
@Fiona1997 sorry to hear about your disappointment but I wouldn’t blame it just on coming from Catholic school–my daughter and some other girls from her Catholic school are at Mt Holyoke; there’s an active Catholic campus ministry group there. Who knows what it was in your application, but with your stats and activities I’m sure you’ll find the place that’s right for you. Good luck!
And congratulations to all who were accepted; my daughter is a first year happy to have found her MoHome.
@Fiona1997 If you really want to attend, apply as a transfer student after a year at another college. Many students do. In the meantime, there are many other outstanding colleges, including outstanding women’s colleges.
Congratulations to all those admitted! Good luck to those waitlisted!
Be sure you tell your parents to join our MHC Parent facebook page. They can do a search for Mount Holyoke Friends and Family on Facebook. If they cannot find it, have them drop me a private message on this board.
