@CaribbeanSun I read somewhere they only charge half but I’m not sure where!

(*The student budget for students admitted for the spring semester is half of the listed budget.)
phew

I had a few questions in mind and wasn’t sure if this is the kind of thing you can email/ask admissions about so… First of all, the decision letter doesn’t mention the major, does that mean we’re accepted to our first choice major? Also, is the aid package revivable or not? And finally, is it renewable for the four years or is it only for one year? Thanks!

@LaurelAS The decision letter does not mention the major as you are not accepted into a major at MoHo. You apply to the college, not a major. Once you get here, you can declare a major. I don’t know if the aid package is revivable or not. The packaege is for one year, and can be renewed for all four years as finaces change.

You can do any major. Finaid is for 4 years, each year it will be reevalated based on student’s financial situation, unless it is scholarship.

Hey, Apetrichor! I was waitlisted last year by MoHo. I am currently a first year here now, so don’t give up hope!

Hi, I’m so frustrated right now. Can you guys help me out, I’m admitted but I’m afraid I cannot go to college
So, I’m an international student. Does MHC meet full need for international students anymore, because this is my situation right now.

My Financial Aid:
$13k for Fall 2014/FA, $13k for Spring 2015/SP
And the budget for 2014-2015 academici year is: $57,046 (including books/personal)
Along with health insurance: $1800
Which means that for 2014-2015 I have to pay about $33k !!
I submitted my CSS profile, and I swear my family can only pay about $11k maximum.

My question to ask for your help is: Why am I admitted with such gap in my financial situation ? Or is there anything wrong with how my CSS Profile is?

Thanks in advance.

Is that $11K that your family can pay per semester, or for both semesters combined? Also, did they put you down for student loans?

@thinktry - the health insurance fee can be waived if you can prove that you have equivalent health insurance of your own, perhaps through your family’s health insurance plan.

@SunnyFloridaGirl: hey thanks for reading. I can pay $11k for one year, which is 25k less than what I’m capable of paying, if I understand the Financial Aid correctly.
They did put me down for student loan, $3500 for this year.
What do you think ?

Well, using your approximate figures, and assuming you can get the health insurance fee waived because your family carries its own insurance, I’m coming up with a different shortfall for you than what you’ve figured. If you divide the 57,000 into 2 semesters you have $28,500 with aid at $13K = $15,500 remaining shortfall. If your family can pay $5,500 per semester, that brings it down to $10,000 needed per semester. You indicated there is a loan offer for 3,500. Is that per semester or for the full year? Also, you can request more loan money if you wish. If it’s per semester, it further brings down your out-of-pocket to $6,500 per semester. The question is where do you get the extra $6,500 per semester? More loans, or perhaps an outside scholarship?

The school uses the CSS profile information to calculate family contribution and need. You might want to email or call FA to go over your figures. I don’t know if this helps, and you may not want to go into debt. I think several of us have received aid offers that fall short of what we really need or would like. It makes for a tough decision to take out the loans, put the family in a bind, or go to a more affordable school.

Thank you @SunnyFloridaGirl, can I ask another question.
Please correct me if I am wrong or maybe too naive, what does “meet full need” actually mean for MHC ? Since this is indicated on the website: “Mount Holyoke College currently meets 100 percent of a family’s demonstrated eligibility for financial aid and does not gap”.

Also, the loan offer is 3,500 for 1 year.
If the College hears about my situation, I wonder what would change ???

Hey guys!! I also got accepted to MHC! Congrats to those who get accepted :D

I’m really nervous because I can’t access the Financial Aid page yet…they said that my ID hasn’t been activated yet. Is it because of the weekends? Also, do you get a mail, as an official acceptance letter?

Hello everybody! I am currently wait-listed by MHC. I wanted to ask a few questions and would be grateful if somebody would answer them.
How many students do you think are waitlisted every year? What are the chances of being accepted? Is there something I can do to boost my chances? (I’m an international student)
Thank you!

@foodie7819
You can look at the waitlist acceptance stats for past years on the “Common Data Set” for each year. MHC’s are here: https://www.mtholyoke.edu/iresearch/data_set

for example, last year they took 36 out of 445 who accepted spots on the WL
The year before: 30/527
etc.

@sanguinemonster, did you follow the instructions for “FIRST TIME USER” to create a new password? Your user ID is the same as for ISIS, but you must create a new password.

Does that mean I might not be admitted to my first choice major (architecture?) and do we only decide on a major when we get there? What are the procedures for this? (Sorry for the flow of questions but I’m international so I need to clear up some things). As for the financial aid, I got grants, so these grants are renewable for four years? And are there any rules for maintaining a grant or are those just for scholarships? Thank you!

@LaurelAS You decide your major after sophomore year I believe, so for the first two years you don’t have to follow whatever major you are going for. I am not sure about the grants, because you have to reapply every year, but I don’t really think there will be huge changes in the amount of grants given each year. Also, the loan available increases every year, so you can take out more loans for each year if you need. Hope I helped!

@thinktry I think their ‘full need’ means the one calculated by them and not by you. I stated that I can only afford about 11k a year, same amount as you, and they offered me a package of $18000 ($15000 grants, $2500 loans, $1000 employment) for ONE semester. That means I pay about $9000 each semester, so $18000 each school year. It’s not very far off from my EFC, but still not quite there yet. You can call their office and ask them VERY POLITELY if you can go over your finances, but I wouldn’t expect too much of an increase in aid if any, because their budget is very tight.
