If you don't know what it is, take a look. It's a very cool tradition. Everything (and I mean, everything--classes, tests, labs, rehearsals, etc.) is cancelled till 7 pm and the students enjoy the glorious fall day:

Here’s my last link to celebrate Mountain Day. It’s one of the Smith a cappella groups, the Noteables singing their rendition of “It’s a Beautiful Morning!” from the 1968 Rascals hit.

Yes, our firstie had a blast at Mountain Day. There was an early morning Facebook posting and an early morning call from D regarding “bells ringing” and upperclass women running up and down the hallways announcing that Mountain Day was upon them. Daughter stated that she did a ton of hiking-- loved it. Fun, surprise experience especially for a firstie.

From all the FB pictures I saw posted from my daughter’s friends and from Smith, it looks like it was a spectacular day. David, I’m delighted your daughter had her first wonderful Mountain Day with a good hike. It appears that because the apple crop was more limited this year due to weather, Baldwinites couldn’t go apple-picking but they bought bags of apples from the orchard (you have to have apples for Mountain Day, if you’re from Baldwin!) and then went pumpkin-picking and hung out in the glorious sunshine. It was my daughter’s last Mountain Day! :(

ahhhh, the “Hallelujah Chorus”— one of my favorite tunes, sorry I missed it! Didn’t know that it was an integral part of Smith Mountain Day. But, I guess it would get you moving at 7:00 a.m. in the morning if blasted all over the campus. (Bells an additional nice touch)
