Mountains Beyond Mountains...

What exactly will the freshmen be doing regarding the book? The letter said something about a "discussion event" but never said whether or not this event was mandatory. I am planning on reading the book, but I just want to know how prepared I should be. Thanks!

i have no idea what you're talking about with a discussion thing but READ THAT BOOK IT IS AMAZING

I really want mine to come! I still haven't received it.

the freshmen are receiving a book to read? i had absolutely no idea this was going on, do we purchase the book or does the school send it out?

i think this one's on them.

well it'd better be, for 48,000 a year!

the alumni are sending all of the freshmen a book that they feel represents the morals and characteristics of tufts. apparently it is supposed to be really good too so I'm really excited for it to come!

yeah..how come i'm the only one who got it so far lol

It says:

Dear incoming student,

the tufts alumni association welcomes you to tufts with this gift...it highlights two hallmarks of a tufts education....we have created discussion sections during orientation to help contextualize the book...

not only do YOU have to read it, but your orientation leaders have to read it too (aka, ME. lol). There will be a discussion event, and I got the idea from the email we received that the discussion will be within the advising group, possibly with the faculty advisor as well.

And yes, it's a gift from the school :)

It's pretty good, I just read the first 3 chapters. :)

it is good, i'm almost done with it, thanks for the responses

is this by book by tracy kidder?

Ugh...every year the school gets better and better, in other words, the incoming class gets more and more stuff for free...i want some compensation!
--says bitter upperclassman;)

i want one... :sulks: it always takes everything longer to get to me way out here in california.

Don't worry, I haven't received mine yet in Illinois either.

And somehow, me, in Finland (a.k.a. Northern Europe) got mine like a well over a week ago! It's weird and oh-so-funny at the same time!

The foibles of the US Postal Service :D

Wow, I had to read this book for CEE-194, an epidemiology class I took during summer session in Talloires. It's a great book, I'm glad they're sending it out to all the pre-frosh!

I finished it the other day; I really encourage everyone to read it. It's fantastic, fascinating, inspiring and extremely well-written. DO IT! lol

I was in CEE-194 with Prof Gute. It was fun.

I have to agree - the book is very good :)

It was really a great read. I read it at this beach on vacation this past week and it was pretty interesting discussing it with my aunt(a TB researcher).
