My son will be rooming in the apartments.

My S will also be in the apartments as an incoming first year. Beyond that, I have no useful information to share. S is not at all concerned and assumes everything will be fine no matter what.

Yes indeed, my son shares in the same Nirvana, and God bless them. His parents, however, live by the ‘forewarned is forearmed’ adage - a little advance knowledge can’t hurt.

This CC thread has some useful advice.

The day my S moved into the apts. I was amazed at how little carrying we had to do! There were friendly stundents everywhere willing to help. We wound up attending very little of the program for parents that day and much time running to the Bed and Bath down the street getting various items. All went well and I left feeling so glad that my S was going to HC. One bit of truth though - as a mom I was horrified by the apts. They were dingy, ugly and it was clear that mice had visited. My s could have cared less and chose to live there three out of his four years at HC. I learned to “let go” (kind of!) Best wishes to all students and parents of the class of 2015. HC is a wonderful, wonderful school.

“They were dingy, ugly and it was clear that mice had visited.”
Ok, we will prep ourselves for that. We’ve certainly lived in some funky places in our earlyl years.

I don’t know when revbon50’s son moved into the apartments, but I wanted to mention that Haverford College took over the apartment management in 2009-10 because the management company did such a poor job. There’s been quite a bit of renovations in the apartments in the last two summers. While I haven’t seen the apartments since, I expect them to be in better shape now than they used to be.

D is about to move into the apartments in eight days. Certainly hope the mice issue has been dealt with. Anyone else with other information?

Oh I’m soooo glad this thread is here!

I was told that older students move your stuff for you…is that true? Should we label our luggage/boxes/bags? Where do they put the luggage if our kids haven’t gone through registration yet to get a room key?

I can’t imagine the school is as much a zoo as Ariz State U (my friend said 1.5 hours in line, in their car), but what should we expect?

(DS is in a Gummere ‘A’ room, not the middle section, any organizational/arrangement suggestions?)

I love how BBB and Target are in one direction, and Staples is equally close, the other way. And Trader Joes in Suburban Square with Saturday shuttles! W00t!

REI is ten miles away, and another outdoor clothing store, EMS is close by on Lancaster.

Did you get any specific instructions on where to go first? I am not a Haverford student so I cannot comment on their procedures. Just to offer another data point, Bryn Mawr has all dorms unlocked on move-in days. Students who fly in often drop off their luggage in the dorm common areas before they pick up their keys. If you drive, it might be easier to leave everything in the car until you have the room keys.

That’s always a good idea!

Nothing more than the link provided by BlindWilly #6, which doesn’t address these questions.

Thank you for that reassuring information.

Yes, some have been re-done others not. But I am picky so that it probably why I had such a strong reaction. My S really loved living in the apts so that it all that matters. I just thought if there were any other type A moms out there I would give advance warning. I think if I had know what to expect it would not have been such a surprise. Good luck and have fun on this great adventure!

We dropped S off at HC today and finally got to see the apartments firsthand. They made me think back to your comments such as:

“One bit of truth though - as a mom I was horrified by the apts. They were dingy, ugly and it was clear that mice had visited.”

We were less than thrilled (especially with the wet floors in the basement) but they seemed to have gotten better (e.g., less dingy). S didn’t feel there were going to be any issues. We met a number of upperclass students who were living in the apartments by choice and all of them were very happy with the extra room, useable kitchen, mild isolation of the location, etc. For now, all is well. I hope others have an equally positive experience.

My S moved in to Gummere last year. I remember feeling a little underwhelmed by any apparent organization but somehow it all went incredibly smoothly. Yes, our car was swarmed by upperclassmen helping move in and everything went rapidly in one trip even though it was up three flights of stairs. Bottom line is my S loved his freshman year in the customs group, is already happily back taking his turn to help freshman move in.

My wife and I dropped our S off at HC on Sunday. While we were sitting in the Dining Center, eight kids came up to S and introduced themselves. They had recognized him from Facebook pictures. All of them were going to be working with him through Customs. It was a terrific feeling for all of us and made us feel that much better already about HC. Every student we have met has been friendly, helpful and very engaging. We hope our S becomes as great a person as these students.

Well, we easily survived the Move-in Day thanks to a well organized registration process and many helpful ‘Customs Folk’. We are happy to report that the HCA exceeded our expectations, although our expectations were a bit low. My son’s apartment was clean and looked freshly painted with lots of living space. The standard dorm furnature was a bit funky, but adequate.

Most importantly, the day was another opportunity to experience the beautiful Haverford campus and to get a good feeling that our son is in the right place.
