Move in Day - Car Packing Question

Not sure if you live close to an airport, but I have had better luck finding minivans through our airport rental offices than the local offices (like Enterprise).

That might be kind of rough with a hatchback and three people if you’re talking about the initial move in. With clothes and all the supplies your student will need for the first year, that doesn’t seem too doable to me. Down the line if you’re just visiting it would probably be fine since you won’t need to bring as much stuff, but for move in day that doesn’t seem like enough room.

Kid doesn’t need winter boots in August… and kid doesn’t need a year’s supply of anything. Amazon will deliver whatever “essentials” are needed in October, November…

We drove our daughter to college last fall in a small SUV and with four people (and the other three had a bag each because we were visiting the area for a week). My daughter took SO MUCH stuff. Had Covid not hit she wouldn’t have regretted any of it though. I know the party line is not to overpack, but my kids have moved every two years for a very long time and immediately making a bedroom theirs is what settles them in- my kids fully decorate their spaces. Ha. We played car Tetris for a few days before we went to make sure we had it down.

Try renting from Turo. It seems to be mentioned a lot lately when renting from the big rental companies is not an option.

We moved D20 in last fall, just under 3 hour drive and 3 people. Her school did not allow any family members on campus other than unloading in a field and using a porta potty so we felt we really needed to pack what she could manage. She brought everything in a backpack, one of those big blue IKEA zip bags, and 2 38-gallon storage totes. She also had a mattress topper we ordered online that was vacuum packed in the box and we had a fridge shipped from Target (should have rented instead…). We fit everything in a Volvo station wagon. We went already and picked up one tote with things she didn’t need for the last few weeks so we could have room to bring the fridge home.

My son made it through a Chicago winter with one pair of gym shoes.

Ours was only 75 min away, always had a single room, whether it was in a suite, or on a freshman hall. When we went to get her out emergently in mid March 2020, we took a minivan AND a mid-size sedan, and filled up both of them, it seemed. Papasan chair. Mini Ikea couch. Books. Clothing. Too much bedding. Minifridge. Kitchen (since we supplied virtually everything for the suite’s kitchen). It’s all in our fortunately large garage, awaiting her first apartment. But that was all stuff that had been accumulated over the 2.75 yrs at college that she was lucky enough to get. On the first trip up there, I think we could have managed pretty well with just the sedan. All she really needed was some summer/early fall clothing, and one set of XL twin bedding.
