I'm going be taking a bunch of stuff like everyone else: tv, couch, fridge etc. What's the best way to fit it all.

We have a minivan so I'm going take out the seats and put couch in there. Try to see whatelse I can fit. And then take my car to and put the fridge and whatever else

But specifically to those with large wardrobes. Are you guys just going to leave it in hangers and stuff and pile it in the car.

Because for me it could be possible to put in maybe 2 suitcases or maybe one gigantic one, but then should I just let my mom take them back because I only use this very small suitcase that can fit on the overheads on planes and such.

Ship a few things. If the couch or the fridge simple isn't going to fit, or if it will result in you not being able to put necessities in the car (like clothes!), ship those. Or if you can, ship a few boxes of clothes and other items that you won't necessarily need on Day 1 but would be useful for later (first aid kit, cleaning supplies, extra hangers, etc. And do NOT bring all your hangers. If you have something nice that needs to immediately be hung up at school, bring a few. Buy most of them at the local Target or whatnot. They are inexpensive and take up way too much room in a suitcase.

If you are moving into an apartment and intend on living there all year round, make 2 trips if need be or take a 2nd car or ship things to your school.

Remember, what ever you have, you also have to bring back.
Most dorm rooms, space is a precious commodity. You may need a suitcase, so get a collapsible, expandable one, so you can easily store it in your dorm room. For transport sake, try those space bags, much better than boxes for clothes.

My school is 4 hours away. Long enough that it would be an inconveniance to make a second trip right but conviniant enough that it is very easy.

I'm going to be in a dorm but I was thinking just forgoing the huge suitcases and just put all the clothes that are hung in my closet and just placing them in the backseat of my car. Good or bad idea??

You don't need a suitcase until spring break. If for some reason you plan on multiple flying trips, then bring a suitcase. Otherwise, make friends with someone who has a suitcase and borrow it if necessary.

it'll be a little annoying carrying them out. Even if the suitcase is heavy, two people can carry it easily, a bunch of loose articles of clothing will take much longer to unload

If you have one of those clothes travel bags, that's the easiest thing. That way you can keep the things you have on hangers (and you won't have to rehang them when you get to school). I did that for a summer program last year, and I managed to fit probably 3 times the number of items in the bag than it's supposed to carry.

Question: Do you seriously need the couch? More importantly, are you sure it will fit in your dorm room and still give you room to breathe?

There are dozens of couches on campus (and in dorms) that you can study on that will likely be more productive than studying in your room. It would give you lots of room then to fit everything in one trip. I had a huge wardrobe (and still do..it's just all old clothes now though...) and still managed to fit everything into my family's minivan at the time (Ford Aerostar).

Another possibility is renting a cargo van from Enterprise. They are relatively cheap and you can definately fit everything you could possibly need for a dorm room in one (I moved to apartments twice in this fashion)!

As for moving clothes, forget the hangers, you probably wont have room to hang everything you'd like to anyway! I suggest getting cheapo set of stackable plastic drawers and place clothes in them for transit. It's a great way to both move clothes and store them in one item. If you are worried about wrinkles, it is easily remedied by a cheap iron and ironing board.

i packed most of my things in garbage bags (except for things that require folding/hanging).

if you are moving into a dorm, are you sure a couch will fit into your room? maybe you and your roommate can see how much space you have and pick out a cheap one together? can your roommate bring either the tv or fridge?

When I moved in my first year we fit everything but the couch into just the rear of our SUV. We bought the futon once we were up there to save space. The stuff in the rear included fridge, microwave, assorted other furnishings like the TV stand and bookshelves, the TV, my trunk with clothes in it, and assorted other stuff. It can all fit if you pack carefully.

I've got a ton of clothes, my plan is to pack a suitcase or two of the stuff i'll need right away and then UPS the rest so i don't have to carry it all.

I brought clothes just by having them on the hanger and laying them across the seat after other stuff had been set on the seats. When I moved last year, my mom and I (just barely) fit everything into her ford contour, which is not a very big car. However, moving out in may, we crammed everything into my friend's family's explorer (that my mom had borrowed) and still had to donate the carpet to the salvation army (however, the carpet was delivered to the dorm, we didn't bring it in the first place). Still, the SUV was alot bigger than my mom's car and it was crammed full. I did have to bring home the minifridge I purchased midway through the year when my roommate moved out though.

I would also say leave the couch at home. Maybe buy a futon at a local walmart or something after you get to your college if you still think you need a couch. It may not fit in the room anyway. You should wait and see how much room there is when you get there.

What worked for me was leaving the clothes on hangers and then putting garbage bags over them so they worked like hanging suit bags (I punched holes in the bottom of the bags.) Then you can tie the bottom so clothes that fall off of the hangers don't fall out. You can also put rubber bands around the hangers so they stay together. Of course, I knew I'd have a lot of closet room and planned on hanging all my clothes, so it made moving in really quick. It was also nice because I could just throw away the garbage bags and not have any luggage to deal with, and it was cheap.

I don't think it's really necessary to bring everything on hangers (only delicate items); you will be sharing your closet so obviously you'll have less space. I have started packing most of my clothes in plastic bins that are made to fit under twin size beds. What kind of furniture does your dorm come with? If it has a desk, bed, closet, dresser, and other things you really might want to wait on buying a couch unless you've seen the room before or have the dimensions.

About the hangers - find out first whether or not you'll be sharing a closet - at my school each person in the room gets a HUGE (for college!) closet.
