Move-in for upperclassmen

So how does it work? Do you just show up whenever or are you assigned a specific time? I realize there is no move-in crew--is there any difficulty getting near the dorms (Kissam Quad) to unload a car?

My kids were always on their own. Many kids volunteer for move crew and go back early to avoid the crowds/get good parking spots for unloading. Also, if you are in Towers and one of your suitemates is an RA, you can get access to your room and go early. A substantial number of upperclassmen seem to move in ahead of the official date.

So are you able to pick up your room key right at your dorm?

Yes, but I believe that 2 of the 3 years D moved in early she didn’t initially get the room key until after a day or 2 since she was “unofficially” moved in. She had suitemates who were RAs and she got the code to the suite, but not the key to the individual room. One thing I learned through 7 years of somebody being an undergraduate there was that things are always changing, so past experience is not always the rule for what things are now. I just know that when I’ve been down there for move in it seems there are a substantial number of kids moving in early.

Hopefully I can clear this up.

Many students move in early because they are registered for different programs that require them to arrive early. Many other students are friends/suitemates of RA’s on campus and get in early. If you do this, there is no gaurantee that your card will be turned on and you may not have access to the building.

Official move in is on August 23rd. When you arrive at your dorm, there will be an RA who will check you in with a key and a room condition report (RCR). There will be no move in crew to help, and there won’t be alot of room (especially for dorms with small parking lotts). I suggest coordinating with students who you know are living near you, and you all can help eachother move in. A good place to park for Kissam quad move in (if they allow it this year) is either at Terrace or the parkinglott across from the Law school. There will be some flat carts and hand trucks around for you to use, though they will hard to get ahoild of since everyone will need them.

If you are looking for a way to get on campus early, I suggest registering with move crew, or cardboard crew. You could always try contacting housing and requesting to move in early, though I know this request probably won’t be granted.

August 22nd not 23rd

VandyPanda,
The move in date for upperclassmen is always after the freshman move in date.

oh sorry I didn’t know. Do transfer students get help with moving in??

A friend of mine used to head up an organization for Connecting Dores. This was the transfer student equivalent to vandy visions (except more social based and less bs). Last year they helped people move in, I’ll give him a call and see if they are still doing that. Otherwise no, i would not expect any help.

Transfer students will have help again this year.

GCN, maybe you know the answer to this … D is studying abroad in the fall. Obviously, she has no clue yet where she’ll be staying when January rolls around. But when would she be able to move in? Can she get in as soon as dorms open back up after the holiday break? I only ask because I may have to request time off work to go with her & help her move in.
