move out day tips?

Commencement meal schedule: [Smith College: Dining Services](http://www.smith.edu/diningservices/10End-of-year-hours.php)

Does this mean that the meals are open to all students? I’m not sure.

The Commencement schedule is just for seniors staying for senior week.

As for move out day, I believe the dining halls are open for breakfast, but I wouldn’t count on it. Remember, the work study kids go home too so they don’t want to generate extra dishes, etc. Plan on stopping for food either in town or on your way home.

Well, it’s also for anyone else who happens to be on campus that week. I just don’t know how stringent they are on checking to make sure you’re approved and I don’t know/don’t remember if anyone can have brunch on Saturday. But I bet it is open to students who are moving out. I wouldn’t want to move out on an empty stomach!

(The kitchen is staffed by student workers during Commencement, but these are students who are hired to work Reunion. Only a few dining rooms are open because it’s extreme consolidated dining.)

I have a feeling that we aren’t going to be running across campus to the dining hall in that case - looks like I will be loading my husband up with food and I’m guessing there will be a trip t local burger :)

Too many better options than the local burger. If you want fast and/or inexpensive, there’s always Herrell’s for ice cream.

My D loves local burger - We live in ice cream nirvana so while Herrels is good it’s not quite like home :)

Flayvors of Cook Farm has the BEST ice cream in the area. You need a car to get there, so most Smithies may not know about it. I’m not a Herrell’s fan, though my husband is. My D is not wild about Herrell’s, either, although I know she goes there.

I’m probably as sad as my D that her Smith years are ending. Although we’ve been celebrating the end of tuition payments since our last one at the beginning of March, we feel as though we haven’t done everything we wanted to on our visits there.

MWFN, there’s always going back for friends’ graduations in a year or two. D asked that we send her Ivy Day dress, which she’s going to wear this year. TheMom said it should go to the cleaners and so I took it to the better of the two we use. When I picked it up, I held it at arm’s length and looked at it dubiously and said, “Boy, I sure I hope I can still get into this.” The guy behind the counter looked at me strangely.

As for payments, we have no problem. Two more months and the first $10K of our loans will be paid off. Whee!!! This is going to take a few years. Thank goodness for MEFA loans.

Education and a house are the two items I consider well worth financing. And unlike a house in a weak economy, an excellent education never decreases in value.

Amen. Better the college degree now than a few extra $$$ when D eventually inherits.

MWFN, where is Flayvors of Cook Farm? What makes it soooo good–creaminess or variety of flavors? Please regale us with stories of your ice cream splurges! I’m interested!

It’s in Hadley. If you follow the road between the Target and Walmart Plazas (on the Target/Walmart side of Route 9), you’ll get to it in about a mile, on the right. Or, alternately, you can take Bay Road (where the Hampton Inn is located) to a left onto S. Maple. The address, so you can Google it, is 129 South Maple Street, Hadley, MA.

They make ice cream from their own cows. It’s very much a local place, with seating for about 20 inside.

Thanks for the directions and address. Sounds wonderful!

BTW does anyone know what time the houses have to be vacated by on Sat? I can;t find it on the web

The houses are supposed to close at 10 AM - ugh!

That’s why I have shifted my going out there from Saturday to Friday! Oh, joy! Oh, rapture! ;)

The 10 am closing is only good for the students who have flights out on Saturday since otherwise it would be impossible to haul stuff out of the dorm room in that limited span of time. The Saturday students have to have everything packed and stored by the morning. Lots of pressure!

Wow - that is a bit of a shock. I don’t have the original letter but I totally missed that - my cranky D just told us not to come Friday it would be fine  I guess she will be OK getting up at 7 am on Sat then!

The Saturday am deadline is such a pain…this means that we have to drive the minivan up to Noho on Friday…take off early from work otherwise traffic in New Jersey is horrendous. How strict are they about the 10 am closing?

For purely entertainment, I look forward to the move-out stories.
