Movement from other industries

Hello,

It is my overall goal to at some point become an investment banker or work in a related field. However, it isn't so much my intention to complete this goal immediately outside of college. I intend on working in another industry, say, petroleum engineering, before the fact.

I have a few questions, however.

What would I do to become viable for the industry? Would I move into an MBA for, say, Finance?

Would there be problems with 10+ years of work experience with a degree from, say, Colorado School of Mines getting into upper tier business schools?

Would I have issues finding a job due to my older age?

Thank you.

With 10 years of work experience the big issue won’t be your school, it’ll be your age and professional title (meaning you should be more senior by this point and B school won’t make a ton of sense to the admissions teams of top B school). 4-6 years is a good range, but 10 is definitely on the high end and could pose a problem.

Regarding getting a job, assuming you go the 4-6 year route, after an MBA from a good B school, you should be in good shape to break into IB.
