The daughter (and her fiance) looked about 15, not 20. It bothered me to see her planning to get married.

Meryl Streep looked like a mom! I agree with PATheaterMom on that one!

I thought the girl playing Sophie could pass for 20, easily, and her fiance actually (to me!) looked older than 20. (Must have been the fact that he continually wrinkled his forehead.) :)

I agree with letsfigureitout, however, that it bothered me to see someone who was "20" getting ready to marry. But that was part of the plotline: the girl wanted to settle down and stay with mom to make sure that single mom had someone around to help her at the inn. As soon as the mom's ex boyfriend showed up, the baby bride quickly decided not to marry and all was well in the Isles of Greece. ;)

As long as we're quoting, JIJane....

"Streep looked far from 59 in the film."

Perhaps that depends on how close to or far from 59 you are. I'm 52 and she looked WAY older than me.

Then you clearly look extremely young! ;)

I thought Streep looked beautiful and perfect for the part. But then again, I really admire her and enjoy her work (most of it) and find it refreshing when female actors of "a certain age" don't rush off to the plastic surgeon to have their natural wrinkles and signs of aging puffed up with botox or whatever they use.

Hey, NMR, c'mon, I only did Botox for the wedding!

And you did not even NEED it! You already looked mahvelous, dahlin'! :)

I saw the film last week with all of my daughters and we had fun. My oldest , who studies tv/film in college kind of picked it apart ( I took her to see the show on Broadway when she was about 15 and then again 2 yrs later )
My youngest reluctantly admitted she liked it and my 18 yr old liked it too.
If you have seen the production on stage, it might disappoint a bit, but I personally loved spending the afternoon with all of my kids at the same time, a rare event these days.
I just found out that one of my friends saw the film 3 times, so I think I might ask her to go see it with me in the city in the fall.
I have seen it 4 times and just love it.
Abba is my guilty pleasure !!

lje62, did you ever see Priscilla Queen of the Desert? It's got a little ABBA in it, too.

This is the second time someone has mentioned that movie to me in as many days. I NEED to see it now.

A stage musical version is opening in the West End soon, it is currently casting (coming over from Australia where it has been pretty succesful).

Priscilla is one of my all time favorite movies but it doesn't have that much Abba music in it and in most cases it is background music. I would love to see Priscilla on stage, hopefully it will get this way also.

Yeah, but it's got a little you know what of ABBA in it.

We thought Mamma Mia was great fun, even though the singing (Pierce Brosnan shouting), and directing (yikes) were a mess. Sometimes it is just great to see how much fun actors have throwing themselves into something unexpected. Like Brosnan said himself why turn down an offer to do a movie with Meryl Streep? We were quite determined to not let anything bother us, even though if you want to start analyzing, there is obviously plenty to keep one busy :D!
