MS enroute to PhD in Economics?

Hello everyone!

I was wondering if you know of schools which offer MS enroute to PhD in Economics, where I could directly apply to the PhD program and earn a Master's degree on the way to my PhD.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Tanya, this is probably the wrong forum to ask your question. But let me say that if you are really interested in a PhD don't worry about the M.S. It does you almost no good on your resume.

Most PhD programs do not even admit students for an MS or MA but only offer that degree "in passing," i.e., after you accumulate certain credits or complete certain courses on your way to completing the Ph.D. program. There may or may not be any special requirements for the masters degree in such cases (such as a paper or thesis).

That said, if you want to know which programs offer an MA or MS in economics the best way to find out is to research the PhD programs you're interested in and then check online whether they give MA/MS degrees in the process. As I said, very few programs would admit you strictly to an MA/MS in economics, nor would they offer financial aid for a masters degree program (unless you're enrolled in a public policy or siimilar program). The money comes with acceptance into a PhD program -- teaching assistantship, research assistantship, fellowship.

Mackinaw, thank you so much for the helpful information. Actually, I am not intersted in MS. I want to go for the PhD. The reason I was asking about MS enroute to PhD programs is that I was assuming that I'd have a better chance of receiving fundings if I were to apply for a MS enroute to PhD program or MS "in passing" to PhD. But I get a sense now that even if I were to only apply to PhD program with no MS degree, I'd still be considered for TA/RA? I simply cannot afford to pay for graduate school, so I definitely need funding for graudate school. Looks like I will be applying to PhD programs in Economics regardless of MS "in passing". Any more suggestions, Mackinaw? Others???
