Hello, I was wondering if anyone on here had a similar experience of applying for a masters mechanical engineering program from another field and had some advice.
The good:
I’m a third year materials science and engineering student at Berkeley and have always had an emphasis in mechanical properties of materials. I’ve taken finite element, continuum, and fracture mechanics courses for my breadth. I also have roughly a year of research experience doing dislocation simulations in titanium (more or less mechanical properties) on campus. I should be co-authored on two publications by graduation, and could get at least two good letters from folks in the department regarding my work and study ethics. Have not yet taken the GRE so not sure on that.
The bad:
I overloaded myself last semester and managed to earn myself a new C+. Aside from this my lowest grade is a B- and I am at a 3.19 GPA at the moment. Took a break from research so expecting to increase it a little by graduation. I also am still lacking courses like fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and dynamics. I’m in touch with people at the following schools to see which courses will be most effective to take until I apply.
-Oregon State University
-University of Washington
-Colorado University Boulder
-Colorado Mines
-Texas A&M
-UMinn Twin Cities
-LSU
In your experience of either applying to MSME from a major like MSE, or perhaps being familiar with any of the above schools’ ME programs for master’s studies, do most of these schools seem a reach? Or perhaps not? I think I could get LSU just because I have spoken to a couple of people from there but I frankly couldn’t say much more in regards to the other schools. Any advice/tips would be great. Thank you.
