MSU; Hear my story please

So I just submitted my Michigan State University freshman application a couple hours ago and I’m feeling nervous, as I only hope to have to apply to Michigan State, as it is my first choice by far.

My story is pretty unique. First and foremost, I’m a Spartan legacy. Both my parents graduated from Michigan State and I’ve been raised wearing green and white. I’m a California student at a prestigious college preparatory high school. However, I don’t have the best grades/scores. My unweighted GPA is a 3.05 and my ACT score is a 25.

What I believe separates me from others is my background and interaction with Michigan State Athletics. I run a Twitter and Instagram account called “Spartan Designs”, in which I use photoshop and other various graphic design applications to create graphics for current, past, and future Spartans, mainly in football and basketball. My work has been featured by the likes of ESPN, Bleacher Report, CBS, and other popular sports networks. My work got the attention of Michigan State Basketball assistant coach Dane Fife, in which he invited me out to Michigan State. I visited this summer and coach Fife showed me around the Breslin, introduced me to the players, and topped things off with an hour long conversation with Tom Izzo about how I’d be beneficial to their program. Coach Tom Izzo offered me a position within the program and told Fife to “make sure he gets here”. I truly do feel blessed for the opportunity that they have given me, as it is something I would hope to build a career around.

If it helps, I also write as a “recruiting reporter” for CBS owned sub-site SpartanNation.com. I have interviewed nearly one hundred of the nation’s top high school football players with Michigan State interest, and published articles on our discussions over the past 10 months.

I feel like my connections and potential job at Michigan State are very good factors to have in my application, but I truly belive my grades are not refelective of who I am. To challenge myself further, I am taking my first AP class this year, and am taking a fourth year of math, and two science classes to boost my schedule.

My dream is to be a Michigan State Spartan, ever since traveling to Los Angeles on New Year’s Day, 2014, to watch Michigan State win the Rose Bowl over Stanford. I wish MSU offered early decision so I could apply in that category, because if I get in, I will not apply to any other school.

Thank you!

I thought MSU has rolling admission. My daughter applied in October (two years ago) and had her acceptance 5 days later. She didn’t attend though.

It is rolling admission.

You’ll know by Thanksgiving. This is an interesting scenario. I hope you get in.

Your GPA and SAT shouldn’t be a barrier: you’ll be a full-pay out of state student and public state colleges love those…

I think you have a good chance of getting in. MSU just sent out their first round of acceptance letters this week (I know this because my daughter received hers) for Fall 2018. She applied in August and like I said, her this week in the initial round. Hopefully you listed all of your accomplishments and accolades in the “extra things you want MSU to know about you” on your app. Good luck!

Also, MSU doesn’t offer “early admission”. No school in Michigan does any longer. They do offer rolling admissions though, so you should know within a few weeks. They roll out pretty quickly after the first round.

Hveryser, did your daughter apply the first week that admissions were open and can you tell me how her grades and testing were? Anxiously awaiting for news on my daughter who applied that first week. Her portal now says its being reviewed by the admissions counselor (which is new) so thats encouraging. Thanks so much!

Quick update, it took a little while but now my transcript and ACT scores have been received. All I’m waiting on is the response.

This morning, i received my acceptance by Michigan State!

I received mine about a week ago. I have a 3.625 GPA and 1150 SAT. Your interactions will help tho
