monkey, while it is stressful, your D is certainly on course. When my D applied, she also was away for six weeks at Stagedoor. Her college list was firmed up before that. But she did not have her audition material selected yet (did that in the fall, though there were no prescreens involved). She did not start the applications yet until around the time school began. She had an intense schedule in the fall but managed to gradually get everything done. Also, mapping out audition dates can happen just fine in early fall. Iâve been with lots of kids going through this and this time frame does work out. Lotsa kids are away in summer and donât start apps until after the summer. It is a busy time but it can be done if one keeps a pace going and doesnât leave lots to the last minute.

Thanks, soozievt!

monkey13: we are in the same boat. Most of my Dâs schools DO NOT have their dates posted. I am going by last yearâs dates to make a tentative audition calendar. And I hate when some schools delete audition dates once theyâve passed so you have NO idea when they usually hold auditionsâŠVERY frustrating for those of us who like to plan early!

I do have her schoolâs calendar so I know dates of school performances and other activities. Unfortunately the whole month of January is out due to the school musical!

My D is away until the end of July and school starts for her Aug 13. She will be finishing up summer reading and completing as many essays as she can do during those two weeks.

And so we beginâŠ

After the fall musical, my daughter decided to focus entirely on her college auditions. She didnât even audition for any shows at her school. Sure, they love to perform but it takes so much out of you. With AP classes, missing school for auditions, and trying to maintain a high gpa, doing a show was just out of the question (well- not entirely but it was for her). Itâs not like a college will say they wonât accept you because you werenât in the spring show in high school. By not being in a show during the audition process, she actually had some time for herself and not nearly the pressure of when she was also in a show.

My D is going to give the fall musical a big miss, too, Mom2them. Supportive, I donât know how your D did it! My D is also, unfortunately, dropping out of jazz band, b/c their big competition season is February and March. Itâs too bad, but we donât need the added stress of missing rehearsals or even competitions. My concern is going to be that come the end of March/beginning of April, when auditions are all over and there are no rehearsals/performances (and we are in that awful waiting-for-decisions mode), that she is going to be climbing out of her skin in boredom. Maybe she can find a spring show to audition forâŠ

Actually, my daughter wasnât bored at all. She really enjoyed being able to finally spend some time with her friends, relax, go to movies, not stress over school work, etc. I think it was the best decision she made her senior year. Her grades were phenomenal and she actually moved up about 15 spaces in class ranking- and she loved that! She was fortunate in that she already met her college roommate and she was able to spend a lot of time skyping and communicating with her. She also didnât have to worry about giving up something for rehearsals. Of course, once the fall begins, that will all start over again but it has been so nice for her to get this time. This is a child who has been dancing, doing theatre, and competing in gymnastics and cheerleading since she was a little girl. I remember she came home one day and said it felt so weird that she didnât have something to do that day outside of school and it felt so nice. It also gave her a chance to focus on essays for college scholarships and she earned quite a few of them.

I was also thinking that itâs been WAY too quiet on here lately, but thought that might be because everyone has been busy researching and putting together spreadsheets w/all the latest app/audition info! At least thatâs what Iâm experiencing. Miles and miles of lovely spreadsheets to break down everything in an orderly fashion so when D gets home @ the end of July, itâll all be so organized sheâll have no excuse but to get crackinâ! For any others who tend to be easily overwhelmed (which is how D feels at the moment), it helps to break it all down into smaller, more âdo-ableâ sheets (one for audition monos needed by each school so you can color code any overlapping requirements, a similar one for songs/cuts, another for dance requirements, then one for app requirements, essay requirements, scholarships, financial aid info, etc.). Weâre learning from others that have gone before us! This way D can focus on one piece at a time, working first w/those requiring prescreens (today work on an essay for this, tonight do an app for that). Besides, looking at the BIG picture w/all those details was just too confusing for my analytical nature to survive! This seems to be more manageable. Good luck, all! Not much of a relaxing summer for us this yearâŠ

Sounds like weâre all about in the same boat. My daughter is in Summer Stock and their performance of Chorus Line is next week. She has met with her coach a couple times, is working with her and her voice coach on identifying monologues and songs, and it looks like we know audition dates for 7 of the 8 programs sheâs applying to. Like for everyone that will be a little touchy since show choir cometitions start in February, and sheâs president so she canât miss those (thankfully she can do Unifieds so that will help a lot). WIll miss the winter dramatic production though. Sheâs also working on her applications (sent her first one out yesterday!), and her essay, plus she started a part-time job. Boot camp for show choir starts in two weeks, then school.

I do think itâs important for her to actualy enjoy some time this summer, so sheâs also had a lot of fun with friends, her boyfriend, etc. Hard to believe we have just one more year with her in the house!

Hey, has anyone noticed that although UMich is on the National Unifieds list, their recently posted audition dates do NOT include any other city except for Chicago Unifieds for MT? (Okay, I know most of you are going to Chicago, but weâre doing NYC!). If you click on Audition dates, and scroll down to âDance, Musical Theatre, and Theatre Audition Dates,â Chicago Unifieds are the only ones listed! Am I reading this wrongâŠ? Help???

You are not reading this wrong. Though not a Unifides member, U Mich regularly holds MT auditions around the Chicago unified dates but does not go to the other locations during Unifieds. Last year they did however have a March 3rd audition date in NYC.

But they ARE a Unifieds memberâŠthatâs why Iâm confused. The National Unifieds website lists them as a participating schoolâŠ

Ok I didnât bother to double check if the were a member but I am sure about the rest.

monkey13 ~ I believe the Theatre Performance major auditions are held at all three Unifieds but not MT; MT is only at Chicago Unifieds.

monkey, when you see UMich as a member of Unifieds, that is their acting program, not the MT program.

^^^right. It all comes back to me. I remember that being the case but I also do know that at least for the last two years, the only city where U Mich held MT auditions in conjunction with Unifieds was Chicago. Iâm not sure if two years ago there was a March audition in NYC but I know there was one last year on March 3rd. I believe other than the auditions in Chicago around Unifieds, that is the only city outside of Chicago that the MT auditions are held.

And . . . year before this Michigan started their MT auditions on Sunday at Chicago Unifieds, in the Palmer House, a day before most auditions were held.

Ditto for 2012. I believe these are the correct dates from 2012 for U Mich:
Jan 13 (campus)
Jan 20 (campus)
Jan 27 (campus)
Feb 3 (campus)
Feb 5 (Chicago)
Feb 6 (Chicago)
Feb 7 (Chicago)
Mar 3 (NYC)
Mar 9 (campus)

Right, I know that the MT program at UMich has those off campus auditions, but I was just saying that they are not officially part of the Unifieds schools even if they audition in Chicago at the same time as Unifieds. But UMichâs Acting program actually is part of Unifieds.

Thanks, all. I totally forgot that a school can be a Unifieds member and not do the MT auditionsâŠI guess I have my blinders on.

I took time off for a little hospital visit, had an Atrial Fibrilation event on top of all other things. Stress is such a wonderful thing.
