I just received a pamplet on it. I live in manhattan, nyc and there are like...none of those banks around. Is it still worth signing up for one? My mom can't put money in it.

Also, can I sign up for other bank accounts other than MT&T?

There are a few locations spread around Manhattan, but I agree that it can be a hassle at times. I live on Long Island and the closest M&T bank to me is about 20-25 minutes from my house.

You can open with another bank if you want to as you are not restricted to only M&T. When I was living on campus, it was honestly much easier to open an account with M&T. If I had to deposit a check or take out money, which you can do at M&T without fees and without leaving campus. Now that I am off campus and I live right near an HSBC, I may be switching over, but this is what is easier for me in the long run. There are other banks in the area but you have to figure out if they are near bus lines and which will be easier for you.

I signed up for a joint account (me and my dad). It was very simple, and I was happy with their turnaround time on my application. I am receiving a checkbook and Visa ATM card later this week.

I think M&T Bank is convenient because it’s right on campus, and you can receive four FREE ATM uses at non-M&T banks per month (up to $2 fee per use). However, their interest rates on their savings accounts (0.05%?!) are absolute garbage compared to the 1% and more at Citibank. Therefore, I think it would be wise to consider leaving M&T Bank the moment you graduate or leave the Binghamton area permanently.

Your parents don’t necessarily need to have access to an M&T branch. With online banking they can check your account anytime and transfer funds right from their desk. If their bank doesn’t offer that service, perhaps they could upload funds to a Paypal account and then request a transfer to your M&T account.

I find it really convenient because it’s on campus and saves me a hassle of having to find an ATM or branch of my TD bank near me. Though in all honesty, I love TD bank. haha.
