Right now I'm currently a freshman at Elizabethtown College for music education. It's april now, and I've missed almost all deadlines for fall 2011. I want to transfer out though, either to another Music Ed program but probably to Musical Theatre. I've got a 3.4ish GPA so far, and my HS GPA was 3.63 (unweighted) and 1880s on the SAT (not sure if they look at those or not.)

So, what should I do?

Should I come back in the fall, but transfer out for next spring? Spend the fall semester at community college? I'm also worried about the whole auditioning process, just because most schools aren't doing them any more for the year, and I worry about trying to audition to get in for the spring semester. Would I just need to go in undecided and audition after?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

We have one more audition which is geared toward transfer students at Marymount Manhattan this Saturday. There may still be slots available. We also audition students in November and they can come starting in the spring semester, but do not start actual MT courses till the fall because they are year long but they can still take the needed theatre courses and general courses. Just a FYI that most programs do not admit students in the spring semester, I’m sure someone else can chime in with some other schools, but all I know of is Marymount and Pace that do that. Doing courses at a CC can be great and save tons of money if you are planning on attending a non-Conservatory program, but taking lots of gen eds to go to a Conservatory program tends to be a waste but make judgments based on where you’re auditioning. If you have more questions specifically geared toward Marymount feel free to PM me.

bpearson, you just described me pretty much. Except I’m looking at non-auditions.

Also…as I was thinking about this, some of the schools I looked at have later transfer dates.

Metropolitan State College of Denver has audition dates in August if you’re ok with going that far away.

And as far as non-auditions…
Muhlenberg’s transfer deadline is in June
University of South Alabama has a transfer deadline in July.

You may want to check and see if Wichita State university is still accepting transfer students for the fall. They have a non-audition BFA in Musical Theatre.

Thanks, that helps a lot. Am I under the right impression that an audition school will have a stronger program than a non-audition school?

Right now I’m not necessarially looking into conservatories (unless I’m missing something.)
Some possibilities are:
James Madison
Elon
Coastal Carolina
Ithaca
Syracuse

With most auditioned BFA programs, like the one at Syracuse, you will probably have to start in the fall semester as a freshman; it is unlikely that you will be allowed to transfer in for spring semester. And most of your Music Ed. credits will probably not apply to a MT program.

Most of the programs you mentioned, although not strictly conservatories, are conservatory “style” programs, and highly selective and intensive. A great deal of preparation is generally required to audition successfully for these schools. As you seem to be unsure if you want Musical Theater or Music Ed, perhaps you should take a look at some BA and/or non-auditioned programs.

You might want to take a look at Roosevelt CCPA in Chicago. Good BFA MT program that does accept transfer students as Sophomores. It’s an audition conserv. program, though.
