For a business major, which is better?
Look at what each school offers. University of Rochester seems to have a business school within the University as well as an MBA program. Muhlenberg has business majors. Look at placement rates at each school.
I graduated from the UoR a loooong time ago as a PoliSci/Eco double major and my D was accepted to Muhlenberg and it is in the top 2 of her choices. We’ve visited the campus, with a focus on the theater dept. and I found this thread while researching as much as I can learn about Muhlenberg to try to help my D with her own decision (likely Muhlenberg vs. Skidmore.)
I can’t help with your major-specific question, but I can tell you that they are extremely different regarding the campus and overall college experience. UofR is a relatively small university, with a campus of 154 acres, and Muhlenberg is, a relatively very small liberal arts college, being situated on only 82 acres. Both have pretty campuses with beautiful old buildings with some very modern buildings mixed in.
The UoR has a network of underground tunnels that connect many of the academic buildings (and the upper-classman all-suite dorms in what we used to call “Phase”), which is a really nice perk during the long, cold snowy/rainy months. The focal point of the academic quad is beautiful Rush Rhees Library, with a 50-bell carillon that rings on the quarter hour, and counts out the hour with “bongs” - it didn’t play exactly like this when I was there, but here’s a link to what it sounds like on campus at noon - http://www.sas.rochester.edu/mur/assets/audio/longChimes12.mp3
You might want to check out the current undergrad. grading system at UoR. I recall getting a C on a Calc 101 exam that I earned a 7 on. The mean was a score of 9. Yes, that was out of 100 possible points. Hopefully that style of grading has been improved! (I retook that class, not believing I earned my first-ever D final grade, and brought my grade up to a whopping D+ the following semester. The rumor was that they used that class as a weed-out course to reduce the number of pre-med and engineering majors.)
I definitely don’t mean to bash my alma mater! I had a really great overall experience there, walked-on to the women’s lacrosse team as a first-time JV player, which was a lot of fun, met some amazing people and have some truly great memories. However, after going through this process with our oldest I now realize that UoR was not the best fit college for me. I would have probably thrived much more at a small LAC like Muhlenberg, both academically and socially, with the smaller campus where professors not only know your name, but will notice if you miss a class. If I attended a college reunion (which I never have done) I very likely would not know a single person there from my graduation year. I don’t believe that would be possible at a school like Muhlenberg.
The overall experience will be so drastically different, that I strongly suggest you visit if you haven’t already done so.
Best wishes with your decision process!!
