Music/Audio Technology Schools

First of all, I apologize at the probable repetition of this thread, but I wanted answers that were more personal to my situation, or at least maybe some help pointing me to a thread that might be able to answer my questions.

One thing that I've noticed that is extremely confusing and difficult about these majors is that schools usually tend to all call them different things, which make finding a school with the major I want really difficult.

I've seen Music Technology, Electronic Music Production, Audio Technology, Music Production, Studio Composition, Music Composition, Composition with an emphasis in technology, ect ect. You get my drift. I'm not all that interested in sitting in a studio and recording someone else strumming their guitar. I'd only like to dip into understanding recording vocals and things, but mainly I'd rather sit in a DAW and produce sound/music, either for visual media or just plain music.

I've been looking around and realize that it's probably better for me to stay on the cheap side, and maybe find a community college to take it at and later transfer into a public, yet credible university, preferably California. Does anybody have any ideas or can enlighten me on what sort of degree type I'm looking for? Or does anybody have a good fit about what I'd like to do? I'd really appreciate any help! Thanks

Fundamental question to get you started with this: Do you play an instrument or do you just know how to use the computer? Different schools have different requirements for actual musical ability for these types of majors. Some even have multiple degree types (BS, BM, etc) for the same majors, depending on whether you plan to also take up private study of an instrument with it. Also, if you do play an instrument, are you classical, jazz, or another style? Audition requirements vary greatly for these majors.

Hey! I have had experience with playing various instruments. Mostly piano and trumpet from back in high school, but I wouldn’t say I know how to play them well enough to incorporate that into my degree, just my knowledge of music in general. I’m mostly just interest in the tech part of it and composing that way.

Edit, I do have some experience already in the field. I took an electronic music production class that really only went over the basics of how to use Reason and general information. I also took a class in electronic music that went over the history of the field and we had a few projects involving Logic, but nothing too intense.

zalexx, I am not directly familiar with the CA programs, but I believe another poster, SJTH, has a son who was interested in music tech/composition flavored programs who had looked at UCSD. I believe he was also accepted to Loyola Marymont in LA (but not as much compositon.)

Maybe pm her - I think she may have suggestions for your neck of the woods.

(My son is in this field of study but the schools he looked at would be very expensive for you OOS/private.)

PS UC Irvine has a MASTERS in a hybrid music tech/interarts program…so maybe they have UG too???
