Hi, my daughter was recently contacted by a professor to come in for a "live" audition at his school. The schoool has already been sent her CD; however, they said to get a more accurate assessment for a scholarship, they need to see her perform. This is fine and we will do this but it is a school that is far away. I have been told by others that if the professor requests to actually have you come to the school you have a very good chance at a nice scholarship. Can anyone shed some light here? This will not be a cheap trip for a 3 minute audition. Thanks.

I can think of several possible reasons for such a request. I do not think you should assume that it means anything about a possible scholarship just yet. That would likely depend on the live audition, and anything could happen there. As well as the audition, which should be longer than three minutes under the circumstances, this could be an opportunity to take a sample lesson with the teacher in question. If this school is on her short list, then she would probably want to do that in any event before making any decisions. She could also take the opportunity to tour the campus and sit in on a couple of classes, so the trip could be valuable in a number of ways.

If finances are an issue, schools have been know to pay for part or all of the cost associated with the visit of an applicant that they really want. If they are willing to do that, then I would say that there is a good chance that they will offer her a nice scholarship or talent award. At the very least, they may be able to let her sleep in the dorms (possibly with a current music major) and give her some meal tickets for the school cafeteria.

Thanks for the reply BassDad (I have read you extensively before this question, so I feel honored). I did contact the school to my daugther’s great dismay and told them this was an expensive trip for us. They never mentioned anything about helping to fund the trip. In any case, we will be going as it’s a beautiful city and would be just fun anyhow. I will tell my daughter she should be setting up a music lesson while we are there. What is the best way to go about getting meal tickets, the possible lesson, etc.? Thanks in advance for your help.

To ask about the sample lesson, she should contact the teacher directly. It would be much better for her to make this contact than you. Teachers get really busy during audition season, so it would be good to call or email about this ASAP.

To ask about a dorm stay or meal tickets, contact the admissions office (music admissions if there is a separate office for that). If the dorm stay is impossible, ask if they have discounts in place with local hotels. It would be good if she could do this, but you could make the call if she will not.

Thanks, for the information. One more question, with all of the other CDs that were sent, including an uploaded link of her music, why haven’t other colleges contacted her for a live audition? Maybe this isn’t the norm?

It depends on the school and the instrument or voice. In some cases, pre-screening of recordings is used to eliminate those who would have no chance. After submitting a recording as part of a pre-screening process, you should always hear one way or another. There are other threads on the Music Majors section that indicate some people have received notification of results of pre-screening and others have not.

In other cases, recordings are used in lieu of a live audition. Again, you should eventually hear something but that something is likely to be either an acceptance or a rejection and those generally arrive in March or early April. If the recording was submitted in lieu of a live audition, it would be fairly rare to be asked to come and present a live audition.

Please note that I edited my previous post after your most recent question. If you have not read it since it was edited, you may wish to have another look at it.

Okay, well, my child just got a letter (yesterday) for being a finalist for an enormous scholarship at another university. She now says she will not go on the music audition and instead take a trip for the other scholarship. She doesn’t feel she can miss too much school even as a senior Maybe they can reschedule her in March. We are coming from far away and they never offered any financial help even a cheaper hotel rate. the month of January and February are getting very busy with interviews and auditions.

Best of luck to her. Please let us know of any acceptances she receives on the thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/1045522-master-list-music-school-acceptances-fall-2011-a.html
