Music Composition Repertoire List

My son is applying to schools for music composition. A few of these schools ask for a repertoire list. I assume they are looking for a list of his compositions rather than performance repertoire. Are they looking for a list of what has been performed? (That would be an extremely short list.) Or, are they looking for a list of all that he has written? This would be a much longer list. What should be included for each piece - maybe instrumentation?

My daughter listed all pieces written and starred those that had been performed. She put instruments, date written and duration at each entry. For pieces performed, she indicated where, when and by whom. At the bottom, in parentheses, she explained the asterisk and indicated which pieces were recorded for which she had CD’s available. (Sent you a sample privately)

Everyone probably does this a little differently. One thing your son could do would be to visit websites of composers, or even better, young composers whom he might know.

As always, thanks compmom!

Do note that if the school to which he’s applying also requires an audition on an instrument - a performance repertoire for that instrument will be required in addition to his list of compositions (which should include all the info Compmom stated.)

Son’s first application is for the University of Hartford. He contacted them since there was some conflicting information between the application itself and the website. They said they would like a repertoire list for his performance audition, not his compositions. In the case of Hartt, his audition will be on jazz guitar. (He will play classical guitar at schools requiring a classical audition. However, since Hartt allows a jazz audition, he will do that as he has been studying jazz guitar much longer than classical guitar.)

He isn’t quite sure how to handle the jazz repertoire list, as he feels it is much different from a classical repertoire list. I have seen some very simple examples of jazz repertoire lists, which just list songs and their key. He has been gigging for a few years with both a student quintet and also sitting in with professional musicians, and probably knows hundreds of chord charts and has improvised over hundreds of songs. I think he isn’t sure exactly what schools would be looking for. I would appreciate any help with this.

VMT: Son auditioned at Hartt last year for classical bass. He did list some Jazz pieces on his repertoire list but they never asked him about anything on his list and really just seemed more interested in how he played. As an incoming freshman, they know many of the kids are not going to have that extensive of a list for their repertoire. I would go ahead list pieces possibly showing different styles of Jazz pieces he has played and not worry too much about it. They are much more interested in the audition on the performance side anyway. Good luck!

I don’t know anything about jazz guitar (as you know, my daughter plays classical guitar and for that, we felt that Hartt’s guitar offerings were among the best).

Just want to say that your son continues to amaze and somehow I can just tell how much he enjoys himself with music! I can’t wait to hear where he lands!
