Is music composition (because it’s rarer) considered more highly than say someone playing a standard instrument and getting decent but not the best awards (say state level)? I have music composition awards nationally + played by pro. orchestras? Not sure if this question makes sense
Not sure what you are asking. Are you thinking that winning state or national awards in composition mean more than similar awards for instrumentalists?
The important thing for composers is the quality of the work, period. When applying to BM programs (conservatories, schools of music), the portfolio is similar to the audition for an instrumentalist and it is really all about the music itself.
For applications to BA programs, where there is generally no audition for instrumentalists (not always), applicants can submit an arts supplement with recording, resume and letters of recommendation- or list awards in the regular section of the common application. Awards may have more impact in an application for a BA program than BM- at least if there is no portfolio, audition or interview requirement…
There are many many composers out there. Not sure what you mean by “rare.”
