Hi all. UT Austin is one of my top choices. I would like to know if it is a target school for me. Ideally, I am looking to double major in Piano Performance and engineering. If I am not accepted as a music major, I would still love to go as an engineer.
My stats are a little different as I home schooled for junior and senior year, taking classes at NC State university. Because of this my GPA does not really matter (you may say it is a little low). I have super strong EC and a decent ACT score.
uwGPA: 3.7
ACT composite: 32
Senior classes:
Calc 2 (NCSU)
Calc 3 (NCSU)
Physics–mechanics (NCSU)
Accounting (NCSU)
AP Macroeconomics (self study)
Business writing (my own curriculum)
Spanish Immersion (self study)
By graduation I will have 32 college credit (transferable). I took a very competitive course load at the high school I attended as well. I write pretty “fire” essays and believe my supplemental will strongly help.
EC:
-Founded/captained two FIRST robotics teams-both achieving the highest level, going to World Championships in St. Louis. I have been reconized for my work with STEM in the community by the local Towne Council. Raised over $40,000 for STEM education.
-Competitive soccer-multitude of awards including best in NC
-Founder of Community Tech Drive–collect unused technology in my community tor underprivileged students. Recognized by NC House Representative Tom Murray.
-Piano–multitude of awards, including multiple 1st place in top competitions.
-Honor role at the high school i attended.
-1st in state in CYBERPATRIOTS hacking competition
-Participated on high school ethics team-national runner-ups
-Founded a business: Not Ur Mothers TieDye (tiedyed socks)
What do you guys think my chances might be?
Thanks a bunch
First - how many “top choices” do you have? I see you have asked this same question at about 8 different schools.
At UT Austin you will have to audition to get in as a Performance major - and I think Piano has preliminary recorded auditions you have to send in a CD / DVD by like Dec 1.
Then you would need to do a live audition.
If you get in as a Music major - they will not consider your second choice major. Both programs are very intense. If double majoring is your goal, look elsewhere - like smaller private schools that offer Engineering (SMU, Baylor, TCU, Trinity in Texas) or LACs that offer a 3/2 program.
I have about 8 schools which I am a seriously considering. I would say they all are my top choices…
I understand the audition requirements for a BM at UT Austin. I was just looking to get a feel for the admissions climate and see how competitive my resume might be compared to formerly admitted students.
Where do you get that information? From what I have read online and heard from faculty contradicts that.

Read the FAQ regarding double majoring.
It is the “graduating in 4 years” that presents one of the biggest challenges if you are intending a BM in music performance and and Engineering degree.
I know first hand of a student that was accepted to both a BM Music Performance and the Business School.
He chose the Music Performance (as entering freshman you can only come in with one major - as stated in the FAQ), but during freshman year he worked his electives towards the Business requirements.
Freshman year helped him determine his preferred path. He transferred into the Business school - not easy - nor is transferring internally into Engineering. He is currently pursuing music as a hobby through opportunities at the music school.
There are other paths. A lot of music majors also get Music Ed. Some may be Pre-Professional (Pre-Med etc) as well.
The music ensembles and opportunities are amazing. We did not steer this student away from music to business. He figured that out on his own.
If you are getting a different story - ask to interview those students that are currently doing what you intend to do.
