I'm attending U of C this fall and am wondering about music opportunities. I play the violin and would like to keep playing as a hobby. I played for 4 years in my high school's orchestra, and a few years before that too. We mostly played Classical music at school, but also did some more modern pieces as well. When I play on my own, I prefer fiddle music. I can read music and play somewhat decently, but I don't think I will survive the audition process for orchestra. Does anyone have suggestions for a group I can join or another way I can continue to play? Thanks!

Son is a rising 2nd year participating in one of the choral ensembles. He also played and sang at various open mike venues. Also, his house scheduled periodic musical get togethers where students performed.

My impression is that many of the young people at UChicago love music and seek opportunities to continue playing or singing or dancing, if only as a hobby. Also, Chicago is a music town, so opportunities exist outside of Hyde Park. Best of luck to you. Hope you enjoy yourself. Bring a warm coat for the winter quarter!
