I know Williams is an excellent school for the maths and sciences - but can anyone tell me how it measures up in music? I plan to at least minor in music performance (for saxophone, in case that helps anyone) and was wondering if Williams would be a good place for a music student. Specifically, any descriptions of the level of instrumentalists the school attracts, the ability of the teachers and instructors, and overall satisfaction with the department would be appreciated. Thanks!

Williams' music department is strong and well regarded.

Williams doesn't have minors, but you can do an "unofficial minor" by taking lessons and a few music classes while doing another major, or by double-majoring if you're sufficiently committed.

I'm much more familiar with the string instructors than wind/brass, but my general impression is that the overall quality of instruction is pretty good. If you plan on visiting Williams, I would definitely contact the music department to ask about meeting with one of the saxophone instructors (I think there are two); I'm sure they could set something up and that way you could get a better idea of the fit.

In terms of professors and classroom instruction, I actually think music is one of Williams' weaker departments overall. There are a few really good profs (Ed Gollin especially is very cool, and Brad Wells is the man) but also some that are more spotty; I know a few people who have taken random music classes and had mediocre experiences. Still, even a relatively weak department at Williams is probably quite good in an absolute sense.
