Hello - thrilled that my son was accepted at CMU! Accepted to MCS, planning to study chemistry or physics.
He’s also an avid musician - bass player (jazz and classical) and singer. Are there opportunities for students to audition for instrumental or vocal ensembles, or to play in an orchestra, or sing in choirs if they are not in the school of music?
TIA!
I am not sure about instrumental opportunities, but I am certain non-music students can audition for the chorus. According to my son, it is not that difficult to get in, but one has to be able to sight read vocal music.
Note that chorus members need a tuxedo…
it has been several years but my daughter did not get into the music school but did get into the humanities program. She is a vocalist and we were told that they could audition for choral groups as well as receive vocal instruction in private lessons however those lessons were not with CMU faculty or grad students. They were with community vocal program instuctors. Also there were restrictions on time/usage/availabilty for practice rooms. Since the humanities acceptance came with zero merit dollars and she had merit money from other schools, the choice to decline that acceptance was an easy one.
if you look on their clubs page cmu has a bunch of acapella groups and community orchestra club situations.
