Hi, I was accepted at TCNJ and was wondering about the music opportunities here. I'm pretty sure I won't be doing a music major but music is important to me. That being said, some people have told me that TCNJ's music department has some "limitations." Could someone clarify?

I'm a violinist looking to join the orchestra and further my studies with private lessons. Thanks :]

Hi! I’m a bio major but am doing a music minor. Music is a HUGE part of my life. I’m a vocalist and I also play an instrument. There are two choirs anyone can join. Instrumentally anyone can join the concert band (you just go “audition” so they can put you on a part). As a violinist you would probably join the orchestra.

You can also take lessons, although as a non music major you would have to pay a fee. The only “limitations” I’ve heard of is that some classes are reserved for only majors or minors and you can only take them if you get special permission. Also apparently they only “let” the music majors use the practice rooms but I’m sure there’s some way you could get in to practice.

Hope that helped!

Hypothetically if I did a music minor, would practice rooms would be available for use?

You know I’m not really surel, but let me put it to you this way…I was told only music majors could get into the practice rooms on the weekends yet I still got in one weekend to practice a song on the piano. I mean if you get in and practice someone walking by is not going to know you aren’t a music major because you will be practicing! There are rooms on the first floor of the building that I don’t even think you need an ID card to get into. If you’re taking private lessons you’ve got a legit reason to use them (it’s not like you’re just going to be taking up space) so I’m sure you could get permission if you needed it.

I see. Thank you for clarifying :)
