Just a very general broad question, hoping to making it specific... has anybody who majored in music ed got a second bachelor's degree in music performance?

are there policies of second bachelor’s degrees at conservatories? is it actually possible?

We know a number of folks (some professional musicians) who got bachelors degrees in music education and their MASTERS in performance.

Is there some reason why you think a second bachelors is the way to go?

I don’t know why anyone would do that. If someone has a degree in music ed., why wouldn’t they just go to graduate school for an MM?

great minds, thumper?

edited to add - I don’t think this is the question, but people do double major in music ed and performance.

The path is more typically a BM in either performance or ed, and an MM in the second discipline. Funding usually is the major stumbling block in getting two non concurrent bachelor degrees. Federal funding (and the vast majority of institutional aid) usually disappears after the first degree is awarded.

I’m sure it has been done. Unless you have extensive resources, it’s a path I would not recommend.

I don’t know that I know enough to answer this, or if this even helps, but…

At Indiana University’s Jacob’s School of Music (not a conservatory), a Bachelor’s in Music Ed INVOLVES a specific “performance” track (not a separate degree…but performance nonetheless). Dunno if that’s “the norm”, or helpful. Of course they also have graduate school so you could go on for masters/doctorates in several areas. Just something to look at.

My D has been accepted and is starting the double major in Music Ed and Music Performance in 2 weeks. She is really looking forward to it.

Like Percussiondad, my son will also be persuing a double major in Music Ed and Performance.

sagiter, at the same college I believe. are you ready for the move

Percussiondad, yup leaving upstate the 27th. I’m also staying over until Sunday for the Saturday night Freshman concert.

We are heading down on the 28th and coming right back. maybe we will see you there. we may be from another country but it is still a shorter drive.

well personally i’m thinking about getting a second bachelor’s degree because 1. I decided to major in music later in high school so I want more training in undergrad 2. I want to study with someone else

Can’t you study with that “someone else” in a master’s program? Truthfully…if I’m understanding this correct (question to OP), you are getting or will get a music ed bachelors and want to know if you should enroll in or pursue a second bachelors AFTER that. If that is the case, I would suggest you do a masters in performance.

I’m guessing this is the scenerio because you cannot study with two different teachers during your undergrad time even IF you are doing a double major of music ed/performance.

Hi UC,

Have you considered completing your current program - Music Ed undergrad, I believe - then taking a year or two “off” to study with someone privately while you work, then applying for a Maters in Performance??

If I read you correctly, you are concerned that you may need “catch up” time to bring your playing up to a level that you can be competitive for really good programs. Taking a year or two off between undergrad and masters while continuing to study privately with a good teacher of your own selection is a route many have taken successfully.

Good luck - I’m sure you’ll find a solution that works for you.

Any thoughts on the possibility of going for a 2nd bachelor’s in music, for someone who didn’t study music the first time around? For that it wouldn’t be possible to get the master’s in music, since I don’t have the requisite background. Should I start a new thread for this question?

conduit, I recently had a tour of Berklee, and our tour guide was doing that. He had an undergrad degree from Carlton.

conduit, some prior threads.

A couple of points to ponder: is this second pursuit for performance, music education, or a more general broadening of music skills/avocational pursuit? Many public institutions are not too open to the idea of a second bachelor’s, so you need to weed out those that don’t allow it. Funding may well be an issue: federal funding drys up after the initial bachelor’s is conferred.
