My son would like to pursue a degree in Music Production / Engineering / or similar from a 4 year school. No geographic preferences. We're having a difficult time finding lists of schools that offer this type of degree. Most list seem to simply claim a college has a Music degree and expect us to dig into the thousands of choices.

Any recommendations of schools or places to find lists with that level of detail?

I’d recommend you repost a thread here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/

You can find past threads by searching. There are current students with acceptances at a number of programs, and some folks with general and specific info.

I did search past threads and found some great information. Was hoping there also might be a list as almost all schools were eastern schools except for a couple in California and the U of Texas. UT has a top 10% admissions rule so I can’t get in there. Even at 3.8, I’m not top 10%. I find it hard to believe there aren’t more choices than what I’ve found posted on here and only 3 schools west of Indiana. Hence, the reason for the post.

Check out Loyola in New Orleans. We were there last week and they were discussing how rare and special their music production program is.

jason, I don’t know if you saw this link [AES: Educational Directory Institutional Listing by Geographic Area](AES Education Directory by Geographic Area) buried within a couple of threads in the music major forum. It does have a geographic breakdown.

Part of the problem with these specialized degrees is that you do have to do quite a bit of school specific research. There are BM and BS variants, and sub specialties or cross discipline focus that may limit your selection. Many of the BMs may have an audition based component; the BS variants can require strong math/science backgrounds and academic credentials in line with undergrad engineering admission standards.

Some of the institutions may well offer both programs, but within separate academic departments. Take a look at the offerings from UHartford/Hartt [THE HARTT SCHOOL: MUSIC-DANCE-THEATRE](<a href=“The Hartt School - University of Hartford”>The Hartt School - University of Hartford) for example. They offer both a BM and a BS variant. Note the differences in curriculum and course outlines.

There are also programs that combine a good deal of music business/management and may offer a dual major or double degree variant.

You don’t specify a specific focus, but from the way your initial post was worded, it appears you may want more of a technical approach than a music heavy BM.

Calarts, Miami, Sonoma State, University of Puget Sound. Worth checking out and see if they meet your expectations.
