Hi! I plan on enrolling at CMU this fall as a freshman, for MCS. Yay! But that is unrelated to my question. I'm heavily involved with music right now (violin and piano), and I'd like to try my best to continue that in college, even though I'm not majoring in music. I'm sure CMU has music practice rooms, but where are they located, and are they usually available for students not enrolled in the school of music?

Also, is the Philharmonic open to non-music students? Anyone have an idea of how difficult it is to get in?

I feel like I’m in the same boat as you. I’m in MCS and I’m also involved in music (but not as a major or anything). Funny thing is I also play violin and piano as well as choir I’m sure they have practice rooms open for anyone (i don’t see why not) but idk for sure. I do know that you can continue to take lessons. I asked on the tour and they said how students trying to earn their PhDs in music give piano lessons to students. Idk about the Philharmonic but I have a feeling it’s open to non-music students though I bet it’s difficult for anyone. Good questions.

There are several orchestras in which both music and non-music majors play-- auditions required of course.

It’s a small music school-- so non-majors are needed - many of whom are excellent musicians.

You can also continue lessons and classes in Music. There is a full range of amazing classes available and best part-- in nearly every degree program 72 units of General Education electives are required-- 3 of which must be in a related field and 2 of which are open (not from a pre-specified list). So in theory - 5 classes can be in music – with a minor even possible!

I’d call ahead and speak to the appropriate Band or Orchestra director about your interest in continuing your music education and performance opportunities.

My D has a CS friend who plays in the Orchestra.
She and her friend are also in the Kiltie Band…which is so much fun !

Pack your violin!

I remember there being open practice rooms in the basement of Donner Hall (one of the freshmen dorms), and I think there were also some in a few other dorms. I imagine there’s also some facilities available in the CFA building, though priority might go to students within that school.

I emailed Housing/Dining, and they replied “There are practice rooms available in Morewood Gardens, Mudge, Donner, and Doherty.”
