Music scholarship -- NOT music major

I've been playing cello since fourth grade: private lessons, youth orchestras, all-states, principal of my school and of districts. My grades are just decent, nothing compared to what I have accomplished on cello. However, I don't wish to major in music, but still want all the work I have done with the cello to contribute to my college admissions and to possibly get a scholarship. Does anyone know of any schools that would do this? This being to possibly give a scholarship to play in the orchestra but not force me to major. Thanks!

One school you might want to consider is the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. My niece (who is an English major) received a $10K per year talent scholarship that requires her only to participate in one “music event” each semester. (Her talent is singing.) She can choose from a variety of a capella groups, choirs, ensembles, and even musicals.

Look into Skidmore. They have the Filene Music Scholarship there. Students from all majors can play in their orchestra and there are a LOT of chamber music opportunities as well.

i think Auburn gives scholarships to musicians who minor in music. Would you minor in it?

You can apply for private scholarships (not necessarily offered by schools) that are centered around music or extracurricular activities. [Music Scholarships](http://www.musicscholarships.us/) is a good source of scholarships specifically for musicians.

For scholarships centered around your music as an extracurricular activity, check out programs like the [Discus Awards](HugeDomains.com) or [A GPA Isn’t Everything](Appily).

All the LACs that my D applied to allowed a music supplement to her application in which she submitted a recording. No merit aid but I suspect helped her gain admission to the “meets all demonstrated financial need without loans” schools.
