Thanks!

Edward, have you already applied and auditioned? Are you looking at other schools? These programs vary widely, each having its own nuance.
I could tell you about my son’s experience in a rough equivalent program at UMich, but if you already know you’re going to Steinhardt, that info wouldn’t be of much use to you.

Perhaps if you tell us more about your current level of involvement in music and technology, we could all share information that might be useful for your consideration.

thanks for the reply.
I am also considering the music technology programs at UMich and Northeastern. Right now im a junior and havent applied to anyschools. My highschool provides music technology as an elective and im in the second year of it. I am maintainig a 97+ for the two years ive taken it. Also at home i compose/mix/master all my song so i think i have basic idea of what i am going to learn for my major and possibly my career…i hope this is enough information. Thanks

Oh and how is it son doing? Does he enjoy the environment and teachers?
Thanks again!~

He’s really enjoyed it and graduates in April. His program is part recording, mixing, and mastering, part interactive programming/scoring, and part composition. In other streams you can include performance or engineering emphasis.

Please take a peek at the portfolio requirements for the different “Performing Arts Technology” degrees and let me know if you have any questions. (Over at [UM School of Music, Theatre & Dance](http://music.umich.edu) ) Generally, Michigan likes to see very strong academic grades/stats in addition to tech skills, musicality, and prowess on an instrument, especially in the eng stream. Some of the engineering and programming classes can be quite rigorous – strength in Calc and c+ programming will help you. He has also found Umich’s brand of music theory pretty challenging, so it doesn’t hurt to get a god grounding in that before attending. But he absolutely loves the program, his peers and his profs.

About 3-4 students get into each stream each year, four or fewer for the Eng stream. So it’s competitive. For the Eng stream, they will want to see stereo samples (in addition to sampling, composition example, etc. depending on the stream you’re applying to.)

Good luck in you search! Check out indianna u’s Jacobs school of music recording arts degree as well, btw.
