Musical Theatre/Drama program at UCI

There are no middle aged people in the Drama program as undergraduates that I know personally. The oldest undergrad drama majors I know who have gone here were 27-30 not older. I hope this doesn’t discourage you though! I am just being honest; most people are in their early 20s.
In the MFA Acting program, most of the actors are 23-27 I would say.

There is at least one older person in the MFA program. Guessing 35 - 45 but it would be rude to ask her. lol.

Hello! I just found this discussion and thought it was very helpful so thank you! I will be attending UCI this fall as a drama major hoping to eventually be accepted into the BFA MT program. I was wondering, for my freshman year, what courses do you recommend I take that will help me towards my goal of getting into the BFA program? I have absolutely no idea!

Can you double major with the BFA?

It’s possible but could be difficult to make the schedule work in 4 years. Also, some students (many students) don’t actually get the BFA until their third year at the school so uncertainty and graduating on time are going to be the biggest problems with this plan. Best case scenario, it is doable but will take a whole lot of luck and some very careful planning.

Just posting an update to this thread–incase anyone reads it.

Finished my degree at UCI, did the NY and LA showcase. Have an agent now and working in theatre/arts.

If anyone sees this and needs any help/advice with the college process and/or UCI specifically let me know. I am here to help.

@musicaltheatreme we’re from CA and I’m trying to get my DD to consider west coast schools are her list. I would love for her to consider UCI. What are the performance opportunities for freshmen? We’re still trying to figure out the BA vs BFA world as well. Any advice would be welcome.

@musicaltheatreme I just got accepted to UCI’s drama program and had a few questions:

  1. Rougly how many students get accepted to the BFA program per class and how does the audition process work?
  2. Is training reccomended prior to attending to the program? I have lots of acting training and I can sing alright, but I have little experience singing/dancing.
  3. Any advice you have for incoming freshmen?
    Thank you so much!
