My daughter longs to live and go to school in NYC. We've seen Barnard (all female) and NYU (really large and expensive). Does anyone have any knowledge of AMDA or any other colleges that offer a musical theatre degree program? Thanks for your help.

Pace University, maybe? Their Manhattan campus has a musical theater program. Also, I wouldn’t rule out Barnard just because it’s all girls-- that was a huge issue for me, too, but after speaking with students there, I realized that most classes are co-ed since there’s a lot of overlap with Columbia. I know a theater major, actually, and there’s tons of interaction because the Columbia and Barnard theater majors are both part of the same program.

I agree. Check out Pace! It doesn’t really have the prestige of NYU or even Barnard, but it does have a great musical theatre program. If your daughter doesn’t care about prestige then check it out! The fact that she’s looking at schools as good as Barnard and NYU gives me the impression that she’s a good student, so she’d probably get a bunch of merit-based aid at a lower-scale school like Pace.

Good luck!

Wagner College on Staten Island is a ferry ride away from Manhattan. The major is Theatre Performance, but is a MT centered curriculum. It is an audition-select BA program, not a BFA. Their theatre season produces 4 Main Stage musicals, 4 Stage One non-musicals, and 2 different campus student-run theatre groups offer another 8-10 performance opportunities each school year. Plenty of visiting artist opportunities for Master classes/workshops. Accessibility to Manhattan and faculty networking/connections offer plenty of internship opportunities as well. The school offers generous scholarships, academic & talent combined. Completed applications for the Theatre major must be received by December; invitations to audition for the program are extended after a student’s academic application has been fully reviewed and meets admission standards. Audition date is in February on campus; video submissions are permitted if you can’t make it to campus (and yes, acceptances have been offered to students with video submissions in the past). My S is a freshman Theatre Performance major, and is in their Honors program; his MT class is a total of 30 students, 15 men/15 women. Check the website at www.wagner.edu for this school year’s audition details. Good luck with the college search/audition process!
