Musical Theatre With heavy film options?

My daughter is all about musical theatre - but she has found herself being interested in film as well. Are there any programs that have strong instruction in both? I know several programs offer a course or two in film, but I’m curious to see if there are any that have significant offerings in both.

NYU offers the opportunity to train with multiple studios - a kid could easily spend up to a year studying film acting

University of the Arts allows and encourages students to explore multiple artistic interests. There are filmmaking students there, which offers the opportunity to act in student films as well as take classes relating to film. An MT major could explore film as well.

Hartt has a film department and they regularly cast both MT and AT majors in student films. My daughter has had to pass on a couple of opportunities because she is just so busy finishing out her Freshman year at the moment. You can also pursue a minor at Hartt as a BFA and she is considering doing a minor that is offered in cinema studies.

I believe UNCSA has a strong emphasis in both. Though the degree is not MT.

University of Southern California.

University of Arizona

I think Northwestern University now has a Certificate program in Acting for Film, but it was added after our D graduated so you’d need to talk with more recent folks to learn more about it. That could be a great option.

I seem to recall that Western Carolina has a film program as well - School of Stage and Screen.

@carriemc95 To expand on what toowonderful said, a student could study at Stonestreet Studios, which is one of the advanced training opportunities at Tisch. It is possible to study there after completing two years of primary studio training. I know several students who have done this. In addition, if a student is interested in film, there are so many opportunities to be involved in student films at Tisch, which has one of the best film programs in the country. Many Tisch grads have an excellent reel by the time they graduate.

The Tisch program sounds awesome, but NYU is out of our reach financially. She isn’t even going to apply because it would be heartbreaking if she got in and couldn’t go.

Wright State University has a great motion picture BFA, as well as a fantastic musical theatre BFA. My D just finished her freshman year and worked collaboratively with several different film students who needed actors for their work.
