(Must Read) Discussion about the University of Florida on Princeton Review

Average indebtedness at graduation: $15,318
[College Search - University of Florida - UF - Cost & Financial Aid](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board)

UF is certainly cheap for a state-flagship university; however, to say that the majority of the students graduate MAKING money seems a little far-fetched. Unless the student had Mommy and Daddy using FL Pre-Paid and then also supporting them throughout college, BF only covers about 25% of COA.

If a student is Pell Grant eligible, then he or she might need much more assistance to attend. That’s the reason why UF isn’t on “Students Happiest with Fin Aid”, it’s because schools in that list ensure that all students from all economic backgrounds can comfortably and easily afford to attend without (much) debt. UF is extremly dirt cheap for the middle and upper income familes. But for the super low income, other top schools might end up being cheaper…

I agree with the SSobick about the need to raise tuiton. My uncle is an Eingeenering prof. at UF and he says that they can’t continue to attract top level profs if things remain the way they are. UF needs more money to keep growing stronger as a university.

Well I am glad we both can agree that tuition costs need to go up (even though we are probably on different sides of the political isle).

Is that what they call the horrible dorms at UF nowadays? Historic?

You are very biased. UF should not be number 1 in everything. I like it at UF well enough but you don’t have to be so blatantly high off of gatorcaine! UF definitely doesn’t have the best scenery! Ever been to Yale or the College of William and Mary? UF and FSU took their architecture from Harvard and transplanted it. Except for the dorms. UF’s dorms stink. FSU’s is better I heard but still not nearly as good as some schools.

I never said UF had adequate dorms overall. If you read what I wrote earlier I said it should be included in the Top-25 for the “Dorms liken Dungeons” category. However I was also making the point that that we have also have a couple of nice dorms as well (ie:Keys, Springs, Lakeside, Beaty Towers, Hume Hall etc…) The bottom line is that UF should not be ranked in the Top-10.

UF also has a number of dorms that are contributing properties with the National Register of Historic Places. Buckman, Thomas, Sledd, Fletcher, Murphree, Yulee, Mallory, and Reid.

The National Register of Historic Places (National Register) is the United States government’s official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects deemed worthy of preservation. Having a property on the National Register makes its owners eligible for tax incentives for expenses incurred preserving the property if they are offered by the local taxing districts.

Also check out UF’s Historic District:

Whoever reads this forum more than once, realizes quickly that is exactly SSobick’s reason for being.

I guess now she is trying to influence the students vote for this year 's survey. Wow…

^
What a ■■■■■, your opinion is just as biased and incendiary, no pun intended.

At least SSobick takes a legitimate stance and backs up her claims with some evidence.

The University of Florida is a great school, easily the best in the state of Florida.
The insignificance of these rankings pale in significance to the overall spirit of the school.

Just ignore MyOpinion. She’s just disgruntled that she got rejected from UF.

“trying to influence the students vote for this year 's survey”

I am just trying to disclose all of the facts so that the University of Florida can get fair representation on Princeton Review. I stated these topics and people who care about UF are debating them so that we can get a better understanding of where we stand. Nationally these rink dink private schools (with lousy graduate programs) will stop at nothing to paint large public universities as boring, out in the middle of nowhere, unsophisticated, and lacks diversity.

The University of Florida has over 800 student organizations. The university is close to Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, and many beaches. Overall the undergraduate experience at this flagship university is nothing short of amazing if you ask me.

Also Myopinion knows I am a male, and purposesly tried to insinuate that I was a female. Make no mistake this poster is a huge University of Miami & Private School advocate.

I’ve never been to William and Mary, but actually I have been to Yale. Yale is a beautiful campus but imho not overshadowing to UF’s amazing and beautful campus. I’ve also been to FSU which seemed tiny (to me at the time) compared to UF.

FYI: A recent undergraduate survey successfully captured enough input from students for UF officials to consider giving it again.

As of Monday, more than 22,000 students have taken the Students’ Experience in the Research University (SERU) survey, which gathers information on undergraduate campus life.

The results of the survey, which has been given at other universities in the past but not UF, will help the university understand undergraduate academics, program reviews, students’ level of engagement and the student body’s interests on campus, according to Marie Zeglen, the assistant provost and director of institutional planning and research.

The University of California Berkeley Center, which created the survey, will gather the data and provide UF with the results.

[The Independent Florida Alligator: News - 22,000 students participate in SERU survey](http://www.alligator.org/articles/2009/06/12/news/campus/090611_seru.txt)

Didn’t they force students to take this survey by making it mandatory to get in the football ticket lottery system?

Edit: Never mind. I just read the article after my post and it confirmed the requirement for football tickets.

I think it was a good idea. I think I am the only one sometimes willing to take surveys. This forces the students to take it.

But 20-25 mins is a long time to fill out a survey. Especially if you’re just anxious to get in the lottery system. I hope not many students put random answers just to get done with the survey.

Thanks, SSobick. I respect you because you are not shy about it, and always call it like is.

I do not work for UF so no harm no foul. Just a concerned alum

HAHA look what MyOpinion private messaged me!

“Get a hold of yourself. SSobick has no problems acknowledging what she is doing. She is very smart and one of the most loyal alumnus that UF has. Too bad you lack the sophistication to read into her posts.I never questioned the quality of UF. Your knee jerk reaction is what’s incendiary. Have a good one”

I guess I’ll address her here since she blocked me before I could respond, cowardly approach.

This is rather humorous. I lack the sophistication that a UF reject such as Myopinion has.You are just embarrassed you got rejected from UF, a rather amusing failure, and had to go to a second rate school like Miami. I am enrolling in UF Honors next year, something I find funny since you couldn’t get into UF period. Even after all the scholarships I qualified for at UM , I have no interest in living in that cesspool. Have fun wasting money at Miami while I have full bright futures, merit finalist money, and Florida prepaid tuition all at the University of Florida.

Have a great one!

For the second time: I am not a “she”

Let me ask you Myopinion have you ever served in the United States Armed Forces? Because I know I have…

“one of the most loyal alumnus that UF has”

So? Is that a bad thing? This is the UF forum by the way.

What is wrong with having a discussion about the University of Florida undergraduate experience?

I gave my honest opinion about where UF stands, and alot of the other posters disagreed on some of the topics (Diversity, Merit-Aid, Student Housing, and Overall beauty of the campus).

But the point is: for the first time people who care about UF are talking about these issues.

I see nothing unethical about having a discussion.

Ok, I’m a straight girl who served on PSU’s board for Pride Awareness Month last year and I can tell you that homophobia is rampant on our campus and it’s really disheartening. I spent spring break on the GWU campus and their gay acceptance is crazy. Also, a lot of gay students aren’t at all involved with PSU and I think that hurts it, because the organization has a lot of funds and a lot of resources and people don’t take advantage of them, which leads to the group being pretty clique-y.

I agree that UF students don’t realize the negative effect they’re having on the way our school is viewed when they fill out the PR surveys and say, “I never study and all I do is party.”

“I’m a straight girl who served on PSU’s board for Pride Awareness Month last year and I can tell you that homophobia is rampant on our campus and it’s really disheartening.”

I never observed anything excessive while I attended UF not so long ago. Seemed rather progressive if you ask me. Sure probably have a few fraternity guys who talked smack on Friday night but not that big of a deal when you consider the entire student body (about 50k total).

“I spent spring break on the GWU campus and their gay acceptance is crazy.”

Now are you talking about DC in comparison to Gainesville? Because absolutely without a doubt DC is 100x more progressive that this college town.
