My son interviewed (scenic design) for UCLA and even though they warned all the kids that while many do leave feeling they had a rotten audition/interview they should not make the assumption that they will not be admitted based on that feeling. It seemed like a nice thing to say to ease the nerves of all the auditioners, but when my S came out of his portfolio review/interview he said it was the worst interview ever. Instead of being asked questions (as he had been told), the auditor asked him none. None. He flipped quickly through my S’s portfolio book, never stopping or commenting and not even looking at S. After about 20 seconds, he said: “So, do you have any questions?” My S, of course, had a good one prepared. But the auditor just started blankly and said, “Oh, I really don’t know anything about the undergrad program. You should email someone.” And that was it.

Fast forward a few months and my son was admitted to UCLA Theatre. So… I can honestly say you should believe the director of the School when he advises NOT to overjudge your own audition or the reaction you may get from an auditor.

And best of luck.
