Hi! Whenever you have time please rate my chances or weak spots in my application! Thanks!

I’m a Canadian/Czech citizen living in the Czech Republic for the last fourteen years, attending an international school and taking the IB diploma program [I’m a junior]. Our school is really rigorous and there’s none of that grade fluffing stuff. I think there’s like one or two people with a 4.0 GPA - the rest are below.

9thth Grade: GPA 3.6 [blah - does it matter that much since it was early in high school?]

10th Grade: GPA 3.8

11th Grade:
- IB Higher Level 20th Century History A+
- IB Higher Level English A
- IB Higher Level Theatre Arts A+
- IB Math Studies II B+ [89% but it should go up]
- IB Biology A-
- IB German 4/5 B+
- GPA 3.8
* This is a grade in progress I’m looking for straight A's or at least moving one of my two B+'s up to an A-/A by the end of the year which I think is attainable if I work my butt off.

EC’S + Service
- piano [my tenth year]
- Varsity Girls Soccer (probably captain next year)
- acted in most of the school plays - large roles.
- MUN in St. Petersburg, Russia
- Czech lessons
- Habitat for Humanity Poland, about 30 hours
- I worked with a Czech human rights foundation last year
- currently planning a career fair for our high school

I haven’t taken the SAT’s yet, but here are my PSAT scores:

Verbal: 78
Math: 54 [I know, absolutely terrible but I’m studying crazy hard to get up to a minimum of 650 and ideally a 700]
Writing: 61 [I’m not sure why this was so low but it should be able to get it up]

Recommendations: should be excellent
Essay: I will make sure it’s nothing less than excellent

Other Schools I’m considering:
Brown
Amherst
Bates
McGill
Queens

So does anyone have an opinion?

umm...get those math scores up alot?
like you said, you will be studying your butt off. work at it and you will ultimately get there.

^.^

good luck!

yeah i realize the math is pretty terrible.... so what do you think my goal score should be? I know 700 would be ideal but is 650+ acceptable if the other scores are 750+ ?

Yes flootloop I guess that's true but how many people that don't give their scores are accepted? I have no idea. I think I'll just study up for the SAT - i still haven't taken it yet so we'll see how I do....

Thanks for the comments everyone!

The college board indicates that only about 20% (CB doesn't include ACT scores for Bowdoin, so I assumed about 5% only submitted ACTs), are admitted without SAT scores. So, I think it's fair to assume that chances are better by submitting scores.

but only about 20% of all applicants are admitted. the bowdoin admissions office claims that there is no prejudice against non-submitters. like anything with many parts, however, if you leave one out, the others best be excellent.

i think you're chances are okay. i would recommend that you not dwell on any of these colleges too much until you're into them. picking a favorite before you apply, particularly since they're all very tough to get into, may lead to unnecessary disappointment. come back to us in a year and a few months and we'll all tell you different things about which are better. for now, you're a suitable applicant to all those places, so good luck!

Thanks pb2002 and kev07wan - interesting information! So basically I should just prep for the SAT [ i still haven't taken it], get my scores up and ..... wait until I apply, lol. I'll keep in mind not to 'put all my eggs in one basket' and let all of you know the results in a year and a bit [less for Brown ED :) ]

my sister got in with a math score of 640 and a verbal of 760--and a great scholarship...everything but like $10k. sat IIs were in us history:680/ish and i don't remember the other
she was a congressional page

maybe she got her congressman to call them?

"yeah i realize the math is pretty terrible.... so what do you think my goal score should be? I know 700 would be ideal but is 650+ acceptable if the other scores are 750+ ?"

I was accepted to Bowdoin with CR 710, M 570, W 650. And I also submitted my ACT (composite score: 30). 3.75 GPA. I was in IB my junior year, but dropped out of it in my senior year (taking 3 AP classes instead). I have about 5 ECs plus some volunteering and part-time job.

As you can see my SAT math score was quite low. I'm horrible at math (that's why I tested in Math Studies and never planned to take math HL). I hope that provides some comparison for you.

your profile looks really impressive, the IB is a load of work and most schools take that into account.

You could work on your PSAT scores, but the PSAT doesn't always predict how you will do on the SATs- I know my SAT scores were much better and more consistent than my PSATS

As far as schools go its always good to aim high, but it never hurts to add a few more, cause it really is a gamble and you never know what could happen

In summary, keep looking at schools, don't stress out about the PSAT scores, and keep up the good work!

If your profile is already pretty impressive - and it looks to me that it is - and your SAT scores are lower than the average just don't submit them. I didn't and I still got in. Of course there are number of other factors, but I knew my math score was below the average and I decided to let the strength of my GPA, courseload, grades, and extensive ECs help me.

Ok, thanks for the comments guys! I'll see how I do on the SAT's!
