My Chances at Bucknell ED, LeHigh, Colgate?

Hi, I was wondering what you guys thought of my chances at these schools.

Pre-Calculus- A-
Regular Spanish 6 (AP didn't fit into my schedule): A
Regular Physics: A
AP French 6: A
AP English IV: A
AP European History: A-

As I see it, my SAT scores are definetely lower than where I should be, but I retook them in October and I'm hopeful to get around the 2050 range total (1350 avg). My AP scores are also low; I was expecting 2 on Chemistry, 3 on English, and 4-5 on History. Oh well, hopefully I do better this year. Other than that, I've taken 7 AP courses and 4 Honors level courses in my high school years.

Schools I'm considering:
Bucknell-Early Decision
LeHigh
NYU (should have a good chance to get in, my mom's a professor there)
Colgate
Lafayette
Hamilton
Gettysburg
Syracuse
Kenyon

What are my chances?

I also failed to mention that I go to a very competitive NJ High School (ranked #2 in the state last year and #4 this year). There is no class rank at my HS, and I know I'm at least top 20% of my class because of a scholarship award and probably higher. I'm one of very few students who have completed 6 years of language in HS (6 in French and 6 in Spanish) which hopefully sets me apart. Maybe there are strong language schools which I wouldn't have a good chance of getting into with just my academics, extracurriculars, and test scores, but because of my languages I could get myself in? My guidance counselor told me I should have a very good chance at any of these schools. Is that the case?

I meant to say that I have done 12 years of foreign language in HS (the only one in my HS out of a class of 270), and one of the only in my school ever. I've received numerous language awards for my school and at the state testing level. I was one of the top 10 scorers on the National French Exam for NJ.

My college essay is very strong and different (I wrote about my move from a poor, urban area in 4th grade to a suburb), and my recommendations are outstanding (from a History and French teacher).

BUMP, I'll take anyone's input, I just want to be confident of where to apply...

Your main problem is that although your total SAT is solid, your Math and Verbal is too low for some of the schools on your list (Bucknell, NYU, Colgate, Kenyon, and Lehigh). Your writing score is outstanding although will not be looked at on the same terms as your Math/Verbal. Your strength of schedule is very good, you have solid community service, and the fact that you are taking both AP languages are great. If your mom is a professor at NYU you should probably get in. You'll probably get in 1 or 2 of Lehigh, Colgate, Kenyon, and Bucknell. If you got your SAT's into the 13++ M/V range you'd have a great shot at any of those schools. Villanova and TCNJ are other schools you could consider. Keep in mind that when I give chances I am generally a bit on the conservative side. Good luck :)

I appreciate your honest answer. I have an advantage at NYU on tuition and admittance since my mom goes there, but that's not one of my main choices. I could just use NYU to transfer to another school very easily if I wanted too.

My SATs are a problem. I'm hoping that at this point colleges see my writing score as a perk, and don't just not use it. It would be one thing if it was a fluke score, but I consistent participate in writing programs and have strong English grades that they should consider it. Since I just took the SATs this past Saturday, I'm hopeful I'll be in the 1300 range for M/V.

I hear good things about the TCNJ, but I really want to get out of my state. Villanova is another nice school, but I'm not very religious and the impression I got from it was that it had a lot of Catholic students-not something I really want in college.

Also, as of now, I'm applying ED to Bucknell, something that I hope helps my candidacy. From last year's class, they accepted 32% RD, but around 50% ED. Do you think that I'll have better luck with ED or will the difference be negligible?

Thanks

BUMP, someone respond please...

I think you have a decent chance at Bucknell ED. If your SAT's go up slightly, things will look even better. You carry a strong course load and you have challanged yourself. I actully would be most concerned about your EC's/lack of leadership roles. I would try to relate your sport EC's to your summer camp activities (did you coach basketball, baseball or soccer there? If so, list it). Have you tutored in French or Spanish? If so, list it! Try to get your EC's glowing, because honestly your academics for Bucknell ED look really good.

Old hag, I appreciate the input. I have a few other slight ECs but nothing major. I'm an officer of the French club but I haven't done any sort of tutoring. I've got a few miscellaneous things I do outside of school, including being a chair of my youth group. Maybe that will help.

Anyone else?

You've got a shot, that's all I know.

Reply to my thread!

Emphasize your strong points (curriculim and foreign language) throughout your application. Your 760 French SAT II is stellar. Make sure you mention being an officer in French club and youth group. Much more interesting than guitar to Adcom. I think you have a really good chance if you put together a strong application. Keep us posted!

Yeah, I'm making sure to take a lot of time with my application details. I want to do it right, and make sure I have included anything of value inside it. We'll see what happens...

Anyone else have input?

Bump bump bump

bump bump bump

btw? High Tech High School? Allied Health?

Nah, I don't go those schools, and I don't feel like revealing where I go to school in NJ but its a very good public HS

please bump

I did a bit more research, you can get into any of those ED probably. Regular decision I wouldn't count on it. So pick your favorite one, otherwise, find some more safety schools.

I know how you feel with no one replying to your thread. I wonder why some threads get loads of replies and others get nothing, I always feel like mine is the latter.

Thanks for the insight. Yeah, it seems a bit bizarre that people respond more to certain threads. All anyone really wants is for a few people to drop a line or two (taking them maybe 2 min) to give honest assessments as to whether or not they think your chances are good or not.

bump bump bump
