My Chances at Vanderbilt?

So I’m new to College Confidential and I’m not even sure if this is the right place to be asking in the forum, but here goes!

I’m a Senior in High School, but I am also an Early College Student in the state of Florida. This means that I am a full time, 15 credit hour student at St. Petersburg College (accredited 4-year college) and I do not take any of my classes at/with the High School, period. Junior and Senior Year are spent at the college only, but we still participate in clubs and sports at the High School.

My grades so far: 21 A’s, 20 B’s, and 6 C’s. (Let it be known, I’ve been taking very, very rigorous classes since the 8th grade (I was in PreCalc and done with my math and science requirements by the end of Sophomore Year, but will continue to take/have earned over 10 credits in each by the end of my Senior Year). The same goes for History (finished this year, Junior Year) and English (finished this year, Junior Year).

SAT: Math (600), Reading (650), Writing (700). I didn’t study, and that’s my own fault, but I plan on taking the SAT again in November.

My GPA is a 3.6, please be nice in the comments. . . .

Clubs/Sports: (High School)

  1. Concert Band (2 years- Assistant Principle Percussionist Sophomore Year, Most Improved Sophomore Female; only offered if going to the High School)
  2. Marching Band (4 years- Historian Senior Year)
  3. Indoor Percussion Ensemble (Freshman Year; only offered the one year)
  4. State Solo and Ensemble Percussion Ensemble (2 years- Superior at both Districts and States Sophomore Year, Superior at Districts and we could not attend States because our Director was in the process of moving; has yet to be announced for Senior Year)
  5. STUDENT GOVERNMENT (4 years- Vice President Freshman through Junior Year and Executive President Senior Year)
  6. FCA (Freshman Year)
  7. JV Girls’ Soccer (2 years- Freshman and Sophomore Year)
8.Theater (3 years- Sophomore Year I was inducted into the International Thespian Society, Junior, Senior)
  8. Knitting Club (Sophomore Year Co Founder- lost our sponsor Junior Year due to time commitment)
  9. Biotechnology Club (Sophomore Year Board Member; could not continue due to Early College preventing me from participating in the ISTEM program at the High School)
  10. Interact Club (3 years- Sophomore through Senior; Junior Year Historian)

Clubs (College)
12. American History Research Club (Junior Year)

Also, I was in my High School’s ISTEM Magnet Program for the two years I was attending the school (Biotechnology Strand).

Considering this is holistic, what are my chances? Are my chances better applying ED or RD?

You’d have a fighting chance with a higher ACT/SAT score. I’d recommend taking the ACT if it’s possible for you. Your GPA needs to be slightly compensated for with a stellar standardized test score. Bring that up and you have a fighting chance of becoming a Commodore! Good luck!

Oh yeah! I also work at Winn Dixie (since September 2014), if that helps! And volunteer A LOT (300+ hours). Hope that raises the chances! And thank you j4jai127 for the input!

You would be a competitive applicant if you raised your SAT/ACT scores. Everything else looks good, your ECs are good, except they seem a little unfocused. Remember, quality over quantity:)

Quantitatively, you’re on the lower end. Your SAT is fairly low and you have quite a few C’s and many B’s. However, qualitatively, you make up for that because they’re hard classes and you’re excelling by being basically in college.

So there are a few questions: what classes did you get B’s in? C’s? Were they the hardest classes available, did you take them at a college, or were they due to laziness? How do you stand up relative to your peers? Yes, you’re accomplished, but that’s partly a measure of your opportunities and not necessarily how much you take advantage of it.

You have a solid chance, but make sure that you have an apparent reason for the low grades and that you show an upward trend.

As far as ED/RD, I think you’d definitely be admitted ED, and most likely be admitted RD.

Edit: also, I agree with @emilyskates, you’re not focused on something. You’re a member of a history research club and of a biotechnology club? You’re well rounded, but is there something you’re just so passionate about that you cannot contain yourself?

I’m very passionate about Band and Student Government. I’ve been very heavily involved in both the past four years  Thank you for being very clear and helpful, by the way!

Edit: Also, Interact Club.

I agree with most of the comments, either the SAT goes up close to 2200, or you need an ACT of about 32+. You are solid otherwise, but as Vandy has taken to higher standards on their test scores, the range cited-above would need to be achieved to make you a more serious candidate/

Vanderbilt accepts approximately 12% of applicants and is a reach for any applicant because of the low admit rate.

Vandy really likes high test scores and you’re scores are far below thier mid 50%. If you can take it again and get 2200 it will help alot
for now its a high reach
