My chances

Engineering early decision, out of state

3.62 weighted
1170 sat, 1710 sat
28 ACT
6 Ap classes mostly honors
Marching band

Let me start by saying always try. Don’t listen to someone else tell you you can’t do something. But always put yourself in the best position to succeed by working hard to the best of your ability.

Your weighted GPA is on the lower end of acceptance. Your SAT’s are average. My S was accepted with a similar GPA, however, his SAT’s were much higher. You can’t be accepted to Engineering without at least a 600 on the math SAT, also.

Work on bringing your SAT’s up. VT puts a lot of value on them. They will look at the whole package for their final decision (SAT, GPA, overall EC’s, legacy, first generation, being OOS means full OOS tuition, etc) but the high SAT score seems to get you in the door.

I got in last year with similar stats and was also out of state. Unfortunately, I couldn’t attend due to the lack of financial aid. They aren’t too good with it but if you can afford it then it’s a great school. I am really considering transferring there next year since I am not too happy at my current school. Since you’re applying early decision, I’d say that you have a pretty good shot.

Yes definitely try. When we went to Eng Open House Spring 2010, we were told that SAT’s (math/verbal) need to be 1200+ or they don’t even consider you. With that said-you never know. One point I think worth considering is you don’t just want to “get in” to VT Eng, you want to graduate. It is a very tough program with many dropping out after the first semester or year. Here is some info on statistics of the class of 2015.
Best of luck to you!
