My Chances? :/

Alright, so I'll be starting my senior year in the coming week and I believe I have already made my decision regarding which college I want to attend.

Few things...
It will be an early decision,
I will be having an early graduation(Jan)
Only took the SATs once last year without any kind of preparation, I will probably retake it this October.
I'm interested in UB's computer engineering program.

Currently from NY and I would go far as to say I have a diverse background.

Some statistics:

SAT Total; 1510
Reading; 510
Math; 570
Writing: 430

Unweighted Avg: 84.33 ~ 3.3(?)

I don't think we do ranks in our schools or I'm just ignorant.

I've taken Bio, Chem, Physics. Alegbra, Geometry, Trigonometry, College Now Precal, College Noe English, Going to be taking HS precal this year :/. I was in our school's "Smart Program" for 2 years. Smart program includes Research classes, I was in Sci & math in freshmen year, Sci in my second year. I have also taken, computer art and plan on taking computer web designing(already have sufficient knowledge in designing) and Computer Application class.

I haven't really done EC's as I'm like a meh student, school, home, hw, computer & school. Nothing that exciting.

I'm hoping to get in 1600s this time around on the SATs and perhaps take SAT II for mathlvl1/2.

Any predictions on my proximity would be appreciated. Oh and I emailed the college adviser couple of times and gotten quick responses, although they didn't seem to mention much of a feedback on my "statistics".

Thanks.

P.S I think I should give credit to CC as you guys made my decision complete.

Afaik, UB doesn’t require or consider SAT II scores for any program. I would strongly suggest that you retake the SAT and try to bring your M + CR scores up. With both your SATs and HS average being on the low side, and no EC’s, I think that it’s unlikely that you’ll be accepted ED. UB admissions will look at the entire package…but you’ve got to give them something to work with! Where else are you applying?

I’m trying my best :(. I hope at least I get in after being waitlisted, even then I’d be super happy.

I was actually an excellent student both years freshmen and sophmore with 90s and 95 respectfully. Junior, I honestly don’t know what happen and I just idk.

Well heh, this the list:

 1. Penn State (Just for the heck of it.)
 2. Buffalo
 3. Stony
 4. Bing
 5. City Tech CUNY as a last resort

All in computer engineering. I really really just have to pray and hope that I either get lucky or my essay is astronomically awesome.

Ugh, I regret my junior year soo much :(.

Btw, from my understanding, you are attending UB atm?

If your junior year was not a good one, wouldn’t it be better to apply RD and let the school see a strong first semester? Were there underlying factors in your junior year that you will mention in your essay?

I would suggest finding a safety that you would actually be happy to attend. The “as a last resort” doesn’t sound like CUNY is a good safety for you! What about one of the smaller SUNY’s in case you’re not accepted to your other choices?

Haha, I was just about ask if it would be better not apply as ED. I’m not sure what RD is, I assume it would something like a late decision or something.

Meh, if I can’t get into buffalo or bing, and go to City Tech, then I guess I wouldn’t be sad because it actually would be my fault I couldn’t get into to UB or Bing. Maybe I’ll apply to Queens CUNY too.

You need to apply to some safe schools. The SUNY’s you list all seem like reaches based on your stats. Apply to them, but add some other schools too.

Call admissions and the dept head to find out if they take transfers into this dept and what classes you should be taking. Can you start at a SUNY college and transfer? Take some gen ed (english, history ect. elsewhere or online over the summer and make sure they accept the credits).

From reading the accepted student thread on here, it seems that for engineering, they raised the bar and accepted students to UB but not into engineering, with very high stats. Unsure if this is true for comp. engin. too.

Sorry if I sound stupid, but what you mean by “The SUNY’s you list all seem like reaches based on your stats.” I would really appreciate if you explained it a bit. I’m not too familiar with these things.

Summer is almost over, I have to find out how exactly this works. If I can’t get into Buffalo, I will most definitely take classes necessary to transfer to UB CmpE at my safety school.

Yea, I think I picked up on that too. Last year, my friend with a 92 avg but a low SAT applied was denied. Ughh all these stuff are so frustrating.

Reaches are schools where your stats are not really competive in relation to the admitted student profile - you can see the breakdown for each school by looking at the school’s info on collegeboard.com or by searching the school’s own website for their common data set. Students generally want to be above the 50% mark for class rank, gpa, SAT scores to consider the school a match…higher than that if the school is very selective, like Binghamton. It’s a pretty subjective thing, but applying to a lot of schools where your stats don’t seem to line up can lead to a lot of frustration and disappointment…most people like to have a few “reaches”, some matches, and a few “safety” schools.

This is the profile for last year’s incoming class at Binghamton:

59% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher
19% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74
14% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49
5% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24
3% had h.s. GPA between 2.5 and 2.99

Middle 50% of
First Year Students
SAT Critical Reading: 580 - 670
SAT Math: 620 - 710
SAT Writing: - -
ACT Composite: 27 - 30

UB reported the following data:

16% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher
14% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74
29% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49
16% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24
21% had h.s. GPA between 2.5 and 2.99
4% had h.s. GPA between 2.0 and 2.49

Middle 50% of
First-Year Students
SAT Critical Reading: 510 - 600
SAT Math: 550 - 650
SAT Writing: - -
ACT Composite: 23 - 28

However, UB does expect a higher standard for certain programs including engineering. I’m pretty sure there’s some info about that on their admissions site - something to the effect that they’re looking for higher rigor in math. So, while it’s not impossible that you’ll be admitted, I don’t think you can consider it a match.

Some of the other SUNY’s to consider might be Farmingdale and SUNY-IT. I’m pretty sure UB does accept sophomore transfers and you could certainly keep that as a backup just in case. There is a transfer articulation feature on the UB website (search for TAURUS) if you want to see how the courses would line up.

Good luck with your applications!

Do you have any college books, ie USNWR or other which has most of the US colleges/U’s listed, with their programs, stats of accepted students, majors, cost, etc.

You can go to the library to view it, buy a copy at Borders, or get one form the guidance dept.

Your basic stats are your GPA and SAT. Look at the schools to see if you fit with most of the accepted students (the 25%-75% accepted). If your stats are higher, all the better!!

What are the overlaps in courses for CE vs Comp Sci? Could you apply to UB for Comp Sci (may be easier to get in though unsure) and transfer into CE? Just a thought.

Check out this site for programs (majors) and a list of schools with the major will come up. (All SUNYS)

[SUNY: Program Search](http://www.suny.edu/student/search_programs/currfd_oas_main.cfm)

I tried it and left “college” blank.
You pick the major and the rest (I left area of interest blank)

You can search Computer Engineering and similar majors.

No offense. But you aren’t getting into Penn State for sure unless you have an amazing hook, and even then it’s a stretch. Penn State engineering is top 20 quality in the nation so they are selective.

Stony and Buffalo are the strong science/engineering SUNYS so they are also selective and can be considered your reach. I recently went to a Stony information session since I am an upcoming senior and they said that the median engineering SAT M+CR is a 1350. They did not mention the GPA. Bignhamton is considered the top SUNY (or 2nd to Geneseo, matter opinion) and of course are selective in admissions.

Mind I suggest CUNY City College? It has an engineering program ranked a strong as Binghamton’s and I would assume it is less selective.

Sk8ermom, crazed & kaloo

i really appreciate all help and informational feedback, it has sure made me a lot more objective. And especially crazed, thanks a lot for the resources.

I’m going take the sats with full preparation and just go with my luck, I’ll be sure to come keep you peeps updated  specially if i get into UB.

In expansion to this question, I have a 95.7 gpa and around a 1560 on the SAT’s (planning to take the sats again in october and november); do I have a good chance of getting into UB and what other suny colleges would be best suited for me to apply to?

thanks
