My Columbia ED chances

I also forgot another catch.
My parents told me the other day they both donated a lot of money to Columbia recently; about 1.2 million dollars combined....
I know columbia doesn't look at that stuff... but I mean, can't that help?

marshallito: Wow. Your parents donated 1.3 million and didn't tell you until now? How filthy rich are you? ;)

On a more serious note, yes, that will help you significantly. 1.3mil is a pretty large sum of money to donate, and I think the people at the admissions office will know about it. I don't think it's big enough to guarantee a shoo-in, but it should help.

oh, I was just joking about the money, lol.
Another thing, my school was just rated #2 in the country by US News and World Report. Do you think that will help at all?
My school is Pacific Collegiate Charter.

The fact that your school is #2 might make them notice your application a little more at first, but I'm pretty sure it's not going to change how they see you, the student. They'll review you within your school's context the way they do for every applicant...the rank U.S. News gave to your school probably won't have a huge impact when it comes time to make a decision.

And no need to go on a rant about the SAT. It's not a perfect test, but it isn't entirely the test's fault if your scores weren't where you wanted them. Believe me, I understand how upsetting/embarrassing a score can be if it's lower than you expect, but it seems just a little petty to call the test content "crap". Just breathe in, breathe out, and make peace with your scores.

hahaha this thread is hilarious.
1.2 million, omg. why are u even bothering going to college? haha just live in ur rent's basement, dude, and get insane at HALO 3

Hey I'd also like to see if you guys can give me any feedback on my chances.

Teacher Recs: good? dont know havent seen
Counselor Rec: no clue

Current Courseload: 7 APs

Also, my interview went pretty well I think.
I just want to know what your opinions are. The decision's gonna be out soon, and I think I want to prepare myself for what's to come.
Thanks!

Well, I can't give you a definitive answer, but from what I know (basically from hearsay and 1-dimensional statistics):

SAT = above average
SAT 2 = Average/slightly below
GPA = Depending on UW, slightly-moderately below average
EC's = Below average

Roll the dice: Even = accepted, odd = rejected.

are you joking?

The content on the SAT is WAY basic.

Hopefully my AP scores will show through to my real abilities, and my grades as well.

Im upset about getting a 2 on calc ab...
I feel like I know more than a 2, but a lot of other stuff was happening then (family crisis; suicide attempt by another family member), and I explained it on my columbia app, so I hope they see that I wasn't at my best testing abilities.
I got an A in calc, so I hope they see that too.
I did get a 750 on Math II which isn't great, but considering that I never took pre calc I think it's okay.
any nasty comments?

how much do SAT II's count?
my counselor says they're mainly for placement rather than filtering out applicants...but just like everything else in ivy apps, im sure it can 'tip the scale'- i'm beginning to hate that phrase

ED--> columbia (beautiful school/my reach school)
EA--> boston college
rolling--> rutgers (my 1st college acceptance...what a surreal feeling), university of michigan

ap scores: calc ab 5, bio 5, us history 4

i also worked in retail, volunteered at our local nursing home since sophomore year, and competed with my dance academy at regionals and nationals (2005, 2006, & 2007)

i am an asian-american from new jersey.
i realize that i lack many of the academic/quantitative credentials that are prevalent throughout this forum, but do i even have a realistic chance?
thankfully, my interview went well but i cant really depend on that soo...
help me out please!

BTW, good luck to all of the people who applied to columbia ED.

Wow, you're in dance, band, cheerleading, and debate? haha at my school there's just "dance kids," "band kids," "cheerleaders," and "those debate kids". that's crazy that you're in all of that.

i should be kicked off debate team.
the freshmen completely owned me at debate yesterday hahaha =]

hahaha that's funny

balletfunk, if you've chosen those college because they 'fit' you well, that's very respectable. but if you're not applying to more competitive colleges because of your stats, i'd say don't be silly, you have good stats, and you definitely have a chance at columbia and would have a decent chance pretty much anywhere. i don't think columbia or any top school is a given for you, but i think you're fit enough to aim higher, again if you feel that these are the only schools you'd like going to - all the best, respect that.

also just because you don't get columbia Ed doesn't mean you can't get into a peer or a more prestigious school, there is a fair bit of randomness in the process, esp with your stats, and college look closely for slightly different things

hey how much value does columbia place on ap scores in the admissions process
