Is it too early to chance her, if she continues on a similar path? Any suggestions for next year?

She's looking at :

Whitman
Middlebury
Pomona
NYU
Washington and Lee
Bard
Colgate
University of Washington

Thanks so much for taking a look this early on!!

I’m just going to fairly warn you, without any idea of SAT scores it’s going to be very hard for people to make predictions. Did her school offer the PSAT to sophmores? My schools allows sophmores to take it (obviously it does not count) and scores generally go up 10-30 points when it is taken again as a junior.

I asked for a chance thread when I was a sophomore. The responses I got were that I had absolutely no hope of getting into NYU and Columbia, my two top choice schools. I recently made a chance thread again, as a junior this time. The responses I got were that I would most likely be accepted into NYU and that I had a good shot at Columbia. This shows that sophomore chance threads are inaccurate and are too liable to change to mean anything.

Thanks so much, Grape1. Her school did offer the PSAT, but she wasn’t able to go. Any hints otherwise? We really appreciate any feedback.

Polaris1: I see what you’re saying; we just wanted a bit of feedback.
Congratulations on your success!

To be fair, so are the junior and senior chance threads. These threads can’t predict whether or not you’ll get in; the closest they can get is to determine how similar you are to people who have gotten in. There are limited seats to some of these really prestigious schools (to all schools, actually) so not everyone who has the stats to get in will get in simply due to the numbers of people applying.

Trying a bump: anyone? Thanks.

the chance thread is just for fun.

I think she has great chance.

is she over 18

Cute Asian daughter? I’ll chance her for her number. Just kidding :)

Anyways:

General advice - Her activities seem to be very spread out! While this shows that she is interested in many areas, such as nanny-ing, cheerleading, gymanstic-ing, and such, I suggest that she focus more on one area, or two. For example, maybe practice her gymnastics to a point where she is able to compete in competitions, etc.

Some specifics: Keep her enrolled in her clubs! Getting officer positions in them is very good. Some of those clubs have competitions - getting awards will be very helpful as well. Try some volunteering. Have her take a diagnostic test for the SAT/ACT. She should try and get a 2200, or 34ACT. If she gets those scores, she is above the 90%ile of applicants for ALL of those schools listed in terms of scores. Take some AP next year. A competitive amount is 3. 1, or 2 is on the weak side. 4+ is good, but might be too much work; it’s probably better to spend time in clubs and activities than doing massive amounts of hw and studying. Get that UW GPA closer to 4, though a 3.88 is acceptable for your schools. I assume her classrank is fine as well (top 10%) because of her GPA.

^I guess in the end I couldn’t offer anything specific. Well. Good luck! WOrk hard now, try not to leave things off for 11th and 12th grade - you’ll be swamped with hw.

like others have said… you cant get a clear view of it until her junior year is half way through (because that is the year they look at most) and her SAT score… but so far so good
