It saids that you must send in a portfolio and I really want to get accepted but what if you don’t have a portfolio to send will it hurt my chances?
I hope not because if so I feel like I’m about to cry if it does hurt my chances because I always wanted to create my own comic books and one day make them popular globally and hopefully make a anime/cartoon style tv show about them! And I want to make all of that happen by first going to School of visual arts in new york but the portfolio stuff got me panicking a little.
Look on their website and see what others have submitted. Contact them and ask. Most schools have you photograph and submit by a thumb drive your work.
If you expect to go to a top school, you’ll need a portfolio. You can go a school and say ‘hey, I’m a beginner, teach me’ but if you are wanting to go directly into a program, they are going to expect you to have some background and prove it.
Go speak with you HS art teacher and ask him/her for suggestions. The idea that you’d be admitted to a legitimate art school w/o a portfolio review is insane – frankly you wouldn’t want to go to a school like that. Of course they need a portfolio review. How do they know you don’t have zero talent and zero potential?
On a more serious note: when you ask your art teacher, ask for a blunt assessment of your skills. My brother is an art college instructor and he rolls his eyes at the multitude of “anime cartoonists” who mistakenly believe they have talent when he’s performing portfolio reviews for his college’s admissions. Basically, what you’ve shared is rather commonplace, according to my brother.
Do you really have talent that can be objectively confirmed? I hope so. Good luck to you.
